Hello everybody, new to the site and hope to gain some advice, i am at the moment looking to purchase a range rover sport, i have some quireys i hope can get answerd
1..Wich model is best to go for, v6 or v8, have been told the 2.7 v6 is very sluggish and dead but the 3.0 v8 is hard to come by.
2..Are their any years that i should stay away from.
Am looking at the moment between years 2005 upto 2008,depending on the price, have a budget of about 20000, would love the supercharge model but at 17mpg,think i will give it a miss.....would appreciate any help...thanks

Nothing wrong with the 2.7 TDV6... sluggish is not a word I'd use to describe them but they do benefit from a re-map.

The Diesel TDV8 is a 3.6 Twin turbo

The new TDV6 (2010 onwards) is the 3.0 twin turbo

The TDV8 was released in 2007

20k will get you a good TDV6 (2.7) or a higher mileage TDV8 (maybe)

imho try to go for an SE or HSE spec, both have leather and sat nav as standard (all TDV8's are HSE spec) RRS gone

steer clear of SE spec... resale, if thats an issue for you, is terrible on them.

sluggish is the polite word i would use to describe the TDV6 2.7 , slow as F*ck is the non polite version but thats not an issue for everyone.

Depends on what your looking for, if you can handle the fuel prices a S/C petrol could be an option they are extremely well spec'd cheap at the moment and resale is pretty decent on them.

High miles TDV8 3.6 have dropped in money a bit over the last 12 months and high miles versions are trading under the 20k mark so pretty decent value.

Thanks for your quick replys, its the hse i would want to go for, the sluggish or slow as 2.7.lol..isnt realy a problem but i would like to have a bit of power to easily overtake,maybe i want to much, not too keen on high mileage and i now mileage isnt a problem to a diesal its just reselling them worries me a bit, petrol would be a bit much i think with only 17mpg comapared to the 30= with the diesal,

As for the remap i have thought of this for the 2.7 but i would like to buy an extended warranty for the one i buy as i have been told they are a motor known to have expesive problems, is this right, and a remap would invalidate the warranty.Seen plenty of 2.7 v6 but very few v8 models, decideing is a pain in the but.lol..

Not mechanically unreliable... but electronically they do have some gremlins (over protective safety shutdowns etc)..which involve recovery rather than roadside fixes...and usually are triggered by something totally random like a blown lightbulb.

Mechanical issues are usually either:
EGR's (Exhaust Recirculation Valves) can seize causing power loss... on pre 06 age cars this can be solved with an easy blanking off kit and 4 hours of your time... on post 06 a new EGR can cost £400+ plus fitting.
or
Suspension compressor faults or leaks in the system.

Not known of a 2.7 to blow a turbo mind you

The TDV8's have been know to though.

Warranty a must though, especially for older cars. RRS gone

2.7 is NOT a bad driver, add a Pete Bell BAS remap, and you have circa 230/240 bhp on tap.

Mapped or not, do not exspect 30 mpg, unless you drive it as though you are in a funeral procession.

I have managed 26mpg out of mine on odd occations.  In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Frightened away from the Sports due to crank failures
Gone - A couple of RRS, A couple of Disco's. However thinking of another Sport.

personally I like the TDV8 engine a LOT, and the HSE spec gives you lots of toys to play with

Agree with all the previous posts and don't be put off a high miler it it's got a full history and service. Motorway miles better than stop start in most people's book.

Minor gremlins there are but the fun factor is awesome.

I've a remapped 2.7 05 plate and it's fab  2005 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE in Artic Frost. 20" 2010 HST Alloys, sidesteps, Hawke tips, plus minor bits and bobs along with a remap. Four spike spiders ready for the Alps again now tucked up in their garage boxes...

Could you explain what a remap gives the owner please?

17mpg You'll be lucky! Just sold mine I was getting about 11mpg around town! But lovely, lovely car and great spec. Sounds the dogs when you hit the load peddle - I miss it already

IMHO for what it's worth if your not doing many miles go for the S/C and you'll have fun all the way to the petrol station and back! If your not feeling that brave go for the TDV8 same lovely V8 sound more mpg than a S/C you'll get a good spec and it'll have more torque than the petrol. Remap it and I've heard you'll have almost the same power than the S/C with more torque - sounds like fun to me!!

I'm on the hunt for a 5ltr because I've got a goverment to keep!!! Although the SDV6 looks tempting! Cheers Laurence.

Sorry for takeing a few days to reply, so i could be purchaseing a motor thats going to spend more time on a recovery vehicle than enjoying the comfort, going by awd mann post would i be better of with the 2.7 then if the v8"s have a wee problem blowing turbos, 26 mpg sounds ok, have a 3.2 m3 at moment and prob lucky to get that, remapping would invalidate any warrenty would it not SRE, higher mileage doesnt put me off oxford-boy its just the resale at later date would devalue the motor, Its going to be a 2.7 hse or the v8 hse, seems to be alot more 2.7 to choose from thats for sure..

You really do need to talk to Pete Bell at BAS
With his remap you can remove the map in circa 2 minutes prior to going in for a service etc. Plus with a BAS map you also gain the ability to find and clear engins faults.
