Petrol in an oil burner..... help please....

Got a call late last night from a mate with FFRR 4.4 who accidentally filled it with petrol and then drove it a couple miles till it conked out .... (Muppett!!)
He's getting it drained 1st thing this morning and having the filters cleaned.....
I've read conflicting websites... some say that's sufficient... some say it could of caused substantially more damage ...

What steps should he take ??

Can anyone please shed some light and give some advice...

I also read the FFRR has the same fuel mis filling system as the RRS.... so not sure why that didn't work... but that's another story...

Any help greatly appreciated... 2014.5 SDV6 AB Dynamic ... Fuji /Santorini Pan roof and 22's

Have always been led to believe that petrol in a diesel car isn't as catastrophic as the other way around.
As well as the filters, as a precaution, it could be worth getting any fuel sensors checked as they 'may' be damaged as well.
Other than that, I'd say he should be ok Smile ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

They say adding 2 stroke oil (at the correct specification) into the full tank of diesel will also help lube parts the petrol may have stripped

As I understand it, it depends on whether it is a common rail diesel or not. With these, the entire fuel system is high pressure and the fuel pump is lubricated by the fuel itself. Petrol is a solvent and doesn't lubricate like diesel does so the fuel pump can be damaged by running petrol through it. I think the injectors can suffer for the same reason but not too sure.

As the 4.4TDV8 is EuroV compliant, I'd say it's likely to be common rail (in order to meet the emissions requirements) and thus at risk of damage to the fuel pump.

The engine itself isn't a problem, it's certain ancillaries that are at risk from petrol.

As for 2 stroke oil idea, well diesel is a lubricant so anywhere the 2 stroke would get to, the diesel will be there too so I don't see the benefit of adding heavier oil to the tank. More likely to cause problems of its own I would have thought. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I am aware of a RRS that at 1/2 full had 30 litres of petrol put in, which then ran for 100 miles until getting low it wouldn't start. The driver after being informed of his or hers error then filled then tank with diesel and continued doing this every day for a couple of weeks. That was about 10,000 miles ago.
The concern is lack of lubrication by diesel for the fuel pump. However petrol floats above diesel so perhaps therefore wear to the pump was avoided as a result.

Apparently it will emulsify, and lube various parts it comes in to contact with, sulphur used to do this, but due to low sulphur diesel it doesn't lube as much, adding 2SO will give the diesel its lube back, I'm sure you have read this and know about it, but they say it benefits the engine and keeps it cleaner, lots and lots of people saying it helps, but non of them appear to be scientists who will actually publish their findings.

not the end of the world once drained and filled up take it out for a good run and as some one mentioned throw a littl bit of 2 stroke into the full tank and take it out for a good run and just keep topping it up each day for a week or two while the 2 stokes working its self through ,
car will more than likely blow smoke for a while, im not sure about the fuel sensors though
we used to have some old ford v8's that every month or so we would 3/4 fill with diesel and 1/4 jp8 or petrol just to give the parts a bit of a clean out . it sort of acts bit like redex only the dead truely know peace,
Bootneck its not a job its a way of life!

Thank you everyone..... I emailed him the thread......
He had the RAC drain the tank... for £250.... and it seems for now to be running well..... he can now decide if he wants to take it to RR for filters and check the sensors.... 2014.5 SDV6 AB Dynamic ... Fuji /Santorini Pan roof and 22's

Is it still in LR warranty?? If so i'd leave LR totally out of the loop as they'll want loads of other expensive stuff changed if he wants to keep warranty cover.
