I converted my diesel RRS to run on an environmentally friendly mixture of caribou fat and baby seals oil

aren't the D's and the RRS exactly the same chassis/wheel-base/off-road electronics???

Yep, RRS is a D3 in a little black (or any other colour) dress. Made on the same line at the same time.

Nope, wheelbase of RRS is 140mm shorter.

D4 is 2885mm
RRS is 2745mm

I always thought they were the same, until parked side by side and it showed up quite easily. RRS MY12 SE Siberian Silver, Ocean, Ivory and Walnut.

I've owned a D3 and own an 09 RRS and driven them both off road daily.

The main difference is how they drive. The D3 always felt a bit truck like whereas the RRS feels more like a big GT car especially through the bends. Both are superb vehicles although I never really gelled with the D3. I love the handling of the RRS which is probably why I've done a set of Pirelli's in 12,000 miles! D3 can shift more gear. Useful if you are taking 5 for a weekends off roading.

Off road it's horses for courses. The D3 has slightly more ground clearance and a touch longer wheelbase. The perceived wisdom is that 100" is the best all-round wheelbase off road. The RRS is 108" and the D3 113" but it largely depends what route you are driving. There are places a D3 will best a sport and vice versa. You still need to know how to drive in marginal conditions to get the best out of either. You can't just select M&R / GGS and expect not to get stuck...! Even on road biased Pirrelli scorpions the RRS is superb. This is the only time I have got her briefly stuck and it was a foot deep on an un-driven rutted farm track. She got me to within 50 yards of my patient though...!
