Engine Performanace vs the Competition

Like it or not BMW produce a nice motor in the X5 and now that it is going to get the new high torque triple turbo diesel engines, I'm starting to look at our engine range and think we are coming out second best.

The important figures for the M power 3.0-litre straight-six diesel are amazing:

381 bhp
545 lb/ft of torque (delivered between 2-3k rpm)
0-60mph in 5.4 secs

and with those amazing performance you still get:

165g/km
37.7mpg on the combined cycle

What have Landrover got in the wings to compete with these?

They do make a great engine BMW, shame the rest of the car is so bland! SVR 2018 in Santorini Black.

the new X5 is a great car, I had one for 3 weeks. I wouldn't swap my RRS for it though.

I have just swapped aBMW 335d for my RRS and agree on most points but combined mpg is wrong sorry. I used to get average of 32 gallon across approx 15k miles per anum and the new engine you mention can't be both more powerful and more frugal I would argue.

I agree that the engine was superb, even with only two turbos and I even enjoyed the 335 after owning the M3 V8 prior.

Since moving onto the forum I have been increasingly confused with the posts questioning speed and acceleration of the RRS as these two factors were never in my mind re the RRS as the RRS is not about these two and so I would not ompare an M X5 or 6 as its lighter and designed less as a 4x4 and more for a Chesea Cruiser. TDV8 HSE, Remap (+45 BHP + 100 Nm), Taylored sport exhaust system by Pipe Werx
20" HST alloys, Privacy glass, Side steps, Xenon Adaptive Lighting, Adaptive cruise control

Only worry with BMW now is reliability, new models seem to all have problems. The Indy who serviced my m3 was starting to pull his hair out with the amount of problems which to be honest made the RRS look good!

I just think most modern German cars are relying more on their name and the quality is not as good as it used to be. RRS TDV8 HSE 2007- JAVA Black/Black interior,

Why not?

Land Rover improved both with the 3.0 TDV6 and the 4.4 TDV8 betters the 3.6 TDV8.

There's no doubting that new technology is making improvements in both simultaneously, albeit that there is a certain amount of "gaming" of the combined cycle figures with such things as stop/start technology.

But this is still not a like for like comparison. The point made was that an engine can be made both more powerful and more efficient, not that you can increase the capacity to improve one or the the other. TDV8 HSE, Remap (+45 BHP + 100 Nm), Taylored sport exhaust system by Pipe Werx

we have an X6 at work at the minute and ive been playing in it quite a bit and i have to admit.... its an absolutely cracking car with a great engine.

The main reason the 4.4 TDV8 is more ecconmical then the 3.6 is that 8 speed box Thumbs Up

That top gear is sooooo high it's barely ticking over on the motorway...and when I took delivery of the courtecy vouge SE the mpg was at 29mpg (trip from birmingham) but once on my usual commute of B and A roads the mpg dropped back down to 25-26 Big Cry

8 speed with the 3.0 TDV6 must be epic Mr. Green RRS gone
