fuel gauge suddenly stopped working...

Filled up with petrol this evening. Pulled out of the petrol station, gauge reading full. All of a sudden, chime sounded, gauge dropped with 'range' reading plummeting like crazy. It's as if someone had drilled a huge hole in the tank! All other dash functions are fine..so I'm guessing fuel sender unit? Any suggestions welcome.
