Very strange request for a RRS forum but this site has become a fountain of knowledge for me as valuable as google ..............................

Moving house and lifting furniture for the past week, yesterday afternoon, lifting something far too heavy my back "just went", never had back problems before, and still the right side of 30.

Any tips, tricks or remedies for a quick fix, flying to Singapore then Sydney on Friday and don't want to be a holiday cripple.

I've had these heat pads on since yesterday which feel nice but dont really do much.

i would suggest a chiropractor

I was lifting a TV upstairs a few years ago and my back got a twinge, the next day or so i was crippled

My doc suggested strong pain killers and i used these on and off for about three years

My back went again last year, doc suggested anti inflammatory pain killers and i had had enough so i booked myself in to the chiropractor and a good old back cracking session got me sorted, had a course of about 8 sessions over a period of time and my back in nearly as good as new

also, warm heat packs take away the pain (i was using those you strap round your waste), but you actually need cold, gels/sprays ice packs to relieve the tension and ease the pain

get booked in and you might get a couple of sessions in before you go

Dont be put off by the Tramadol, I took some of those yesterday and was fine, which I was slightly disappointed about

I've been and got some Voltarol this morning but to be honest they aren't doing much so I think I will go to the quacks tomorrow and see what he says.

I've done my back in a few times before, but now I have a 2 year old little girl you notice it a LOT more

Personally I use a witch doctor, well acupuncture anyway. Have tried a chiro before and came out in more pain than when I went in! Went to witch doctor next day and overnight was better, have always done this since. Citroen C6

Ive known major back pain since he was a private!

Bottom line is once its gone there is always a potential weakness there. You need to strengthen core muscles to hold it all together. Short term I find heat pads and rest helps - oh and not driving a low sports car all day!! FF 4.4 V8 Soooo looking forward to this bad boy

Hang yourself Hold onto the top of a door casing or something then just let all your weight hang there,it will stretch your back,I get this a lot.

Cheers guys for all your input, nice to know there are plenty who share my pain....just got back from Docs and got some Naproxen and co-codamol.............also got some Deep Heat FREEZE PACKS.

I like the idea of hanging off something, makes sense!

Will try that off a chin up bar at the gym tonight as I am hoping jacuzzi/steam combo will help

Stretches can help too

lay on your front, hands on floor next to your shoulders and push up, keeping waste on floor, hold 10 secs and down, do a few of these

or

on your back, place your foot over your leg on the floor, and put the foot on floor as high up as you can to the waist line, grab knee and pull towards you which will stretch your muscles in the lower back/upper leg

Jonny - couple of suggestions - first try an osteopath - sometimes a little less brutal than a chiro - could just be muscles have gone into spasm and they need a little releasing and relaxing - guy used to do my legs and shoulders when lower back went and the difference was amazing - all interconnected.

Also getting out bed in morning - this is going to be hard to explain in type - instead of just jumping out like we all do - osteo said lie on side legs near side of bed, tuck up knees a little so they are supported by bed and use arm to push self to vertical, rather than cranking forward as we all tend to.

This tip was epecially good just after back had gone to save undoing his good work and while things were still a little tender.

Doesn't help getting your socks on tho  Have i got the busted controller?!?!!?

Is the pain still bad. I got some great pain killing gel called Bio freeze I got it for climbing Macchu Picchu. If you want to try it and its the only thing that really took any pain away from back. I was really sceptical at first as deep heat, and other gels dr had prescribed didnt work. PM and I can either post it to you or drop it off Tuesday night as Foxcub and I are at the trafford centre !

Moving furniture does not cause a hernia, especially not when no back complaints hystory excisted before.

Your spine got irritated by a wrong movement, and your muscles are trying to prevent further damage by blocking the whole column.

These cramped muscles are the cause of your pain.

Take 600 mg ibuprofen to remove the pain.

Heat is also a good relaxant for you mussles, electric blanket for example.

This way you muscles will start to relax again, and the pain goes away.

Try to move as you do normally, but extra walking is always good for the spine.

If you have a pool, swimming is the best recovery and future prevention!!!

Start practising your abdominals when feeling better, since the lack of strong mussle corsett around your spine is the start of this problem.

If all this does not help you, when in Singapore, try a back massage with happy ending!!!!!
