Not a Nikon, but I've got a Canon 450D, it's a superb DSLR!

I used to be a photographer for a living and have used digital kit for years. My first digital camera was a Sony Mavica that recorded the pictures onto floppy disks that were inserted in the side of the camera lol.

If you can, go to a shop and try the ones that interest you. How the camera feels in you hands will decide which one suits you best. There is little difference between different makes with the same specs, but the one that feels right will be the one you'll tend to use most often. |

The D5100 is a great camera and certainly up to the quality of Canon.

Nikon 5100 is good, to be honest all the starter DSLR's are quite comparable, the real difference comes from handling them and how they feel in your hands With these entry level models a lot of the controls are buried within the menu system so you get a neater looking camera (less buttons) but the downside being that the instant control is a little lacking.
