Sat nav screen setup

So I got the 2008 sport. When my sat nav screen comes up it is zoomed right in, when I go along the road the roads and roundabouts on the screen look like they have been drawn by a 5yr old with one eye shut.

Is there a better way to view the screen when not using it . And does the setting stay or does it revert back to normal when you start the car again.

Does anyone have any ideas please. Or could you tell me where if I should have been supplied with a manual or something for it.

Left hand side of the screen has a plus minus symbol and magnifying glass just adjust it there.
