Back in the early nineties, we had a client who actually fell for one of these, back then they were quite new and were more cleverly thought out and people were actually targeted specifically.. before the days of millions of spam emails etc. He went through the whole process and actually came face to face with some of these nigerian guys, and the total cost to him was £38k in the end..
He did see some money back, about £20k otherwise he would have been £58k down, but he realised it was a fraud quite late on and pulled the plug..

Unfortunately he didn't report it to anyone, as he felt a right prat, and it was quite difficult to show on his accounts where £58k had dissapeared to out from his business accounts.. nowadays,it would look like money laundering or something..

I read somewhere, that any one night, at any time there is some poor mug sitting in a london hotel lobby area with a briefcase full of cash waiting to be met by one of these so called bank/government officials..

As you both rightly say, people still fall for these things all the time despite the fact that we are repeatedly warned to never give out personal banking details over the phone or on line.
