I run a forum just like this for a fishing syndicate and had the same problem to the extent in the end I had to change the URL,I think there may be a Spammers website that sells forum web addresses.
It's a nightmare having to keep deleting them all,it was taking me 10 minutes every day before I changed over. MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.

alternative forum software can include live spam blocking (Invision Power Board for example) - phpbb can be difficult to manage
