Dealer withholding maintenance info

I called my local Chester based dealer to request info regarding my cars maintenance history. As I'm the second owner, they refused to tell me what, if any, warranty work or repairs they have carried out in the past. I pressed them to explain to which the reply was 'data protection act'.

Now I'm not a lawyer but that sounds like total nonsense. I thought that act was to protect individuals privacy, not the maintenance history of a car?!

I simply want to know if it's had any recall or tsb work. Is that too much to expect? Has any other RRS owner experienced this from Mr Edwards or elsewhere?

That's bull.

Go into your nearest dealer with the VIN and they will tell you all you need to know.

BMW have a dedicated customer service number which does the same for their vehicles at £1 a min, Land Rover may very well have the same if you are really wanting to know and are willing to pay £1 a min.

Im doing this at the moment and have been advised by 2 different dealers that ONLY the servicing dealer can tell you details of service work. I even asked a dealer within the same network (Guy Salmon) and the very helpful manager there couldnt help. He tried, but couldnt see the FULL details Sad

I did this with my last car (a Mercedes SL) and if i showed proof of ownership and ID to the servicing dealer they gave me the records.

LR arent very good when it comes to this sort of stuff (or most other stuff) they seem to make brilliant Range Rovers that get you hooked. 5 so far over the years and every time LR customer service and most dealers just p**s me off.

Good luck getting the info, im calling the servicing dealer (only 1 for the whole history) tomorrow and hope to be successful.

Carl

I'm the 2nd owner of my car. A helpful dealer from the Disco3 forum sent me a list of the warranty work carried out & full delivered spec list, but couldn't tell me what service bulletins + other work had been done and advised I contacted the servicing dealer.

I contacted the servicing dealer, but my car previously carried a private plate. I quoted the previous plate and VIN. They kindly sent me the information about the warranty work in detail: reported fault, fault found, work carried out. BUT this was for the new RRS that the plate had been transferred to! Suprising what work had been carried out in such a short time on a MY10 car!! Shocked

Anyway... I pointed out that this was for my previous car owners new car and they gone quiet since. I need to chase it up.

Cheers,

Mark

Stealer only willing to tell me when it was serviced but nothing else. Hmmm, I have the service book anyway but thanks for your 'help'.

So I asked what if a gearbox for example had been replaced and was still covered under warranty and had failed. Would you tell me it was still covered under the parts warranty or would you keep quiet and charge me for a new gearbox? 'I can't tell you that sir' was the response.

I asked to speak with the service manager but was informed he was stood next to the service rep and had told her what to say!!

This dealer is my local (in addition to Guy Salmon Knutsford) so I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to official LR support. This is a shame as I otherwise love the car.

If your gearbox was replaced a few days before your manufacturer's warranty dies then its warranty dies at the same time. LR only warrant free from defects etc for 3 years, not 3 years and lots of other bits for x number of days. Your car is either in warranty or it's not. My understanding of the situation, other understandings may vary.

PS Above complicated if the you or prev owner had made a contribution to gearbox in above senario then there may be some warranty after main one finishes ISTR.

This is shockingly bad service on behalf of your dealer.

A service "manager" that can't even speak to you himself? Censored

I think I would email the manager of the dealership copying in the service manager and Land Rover telling them what crap support you have experienced!!

IMO This isn't good enough! RRS 3.0 SDV6 Autobiography Dynamic MY16 Firenze Red.

Warranty details here:

http://www.landrover.com/gb/en/lr/owners/w...ssistance/

Cannot find it a mo but parts do have a guarantee period, thought it was 12 months, but not those fitted within warranty period.

Wonder why they are being so defensive Question Question

Is this an actual problem you are trying to address or just being inquistive to its past history.
Previous owners details on log book, might be worth trying to contact him/her direct

I should say this enquiry isn't in relation to an issue, I like to have as much knowledge as possible on my cars. I don't think that's too much to ask - I'd even pay for the info if it's a time issue.

My previous cars (several audis) were easy to get info about. I just called the dealer and they read everything off the screen, warts n all.

I've got the full printout for my car of everything ever done to it and the costs at each visit, all I did was ask the dealer for it. They've serviced it from the day it left Land Rover after the G4 Challenge so that's why they could give me the full details. I don't see why they wont give it to you, I've never had an issue with any of my previous cars (BMW & Audi etc) and didn't have a problem wit this one either. Ex-G4 Challenge RRS HSE, BV55 YZE. Subtle shade of orange ! Now registered YZE481 G4RRS in Melbourne.
