Bypassing practicality, what is the best car you have ever driven from a driving satisfaction perspective? The RRS is good for 2.5 tons of metal but......

I am a Boxster owner and just got an invitation to drive one of the new Spyders around a track (I have a three year old Boxster and Porsche think they are going to get lucky despite the fact I now have two kids so got a track day freebie - think again!!). I only keep the Boxster - with ridiculous low annaual mileage - beacuse it is such a fantastic car to drive for the amateur - in my opinion better than a 911 (weight distribution but lack of clever rear diff) but if I say that too loud I get the usual abuse from the Porsche purists. The Boxtser Spyder though was awesome - with a much needed rear diff and an flap paddle gearbox which you could abuse to the extreme and it still cope effortlessly it was an awesome drive - feels far quicker than the Boxster as you can get the power down in the corners much earlier without the AntiDeath sytems (as my wife calls them - read "spinning wheels and traction control") systems kick in. Fabulous - but totally impractical in the extreme! And no I have no affiliation to Porsche (if I did I would own a 'soul less' Cayenne and not a totally fault prone MY10 TDV8! ) but admire their engineering.

So - what is car you have driven but, despite practicality, would keep in the garage to put a smile on your face when needed? (and yes I have had the ultimatum to sell the Boxster but I will resist....)

The best car i've driven and played in fun value and complete nonsense was a Renault 5 GT Turbo Rader

Best for fun was my Evo. 4 wheel drive with 430bhp and road legal semi slicks. Stuck to the road like glue

Did a palmer sport day once too where the caterham was fun and the stripped out race prepared jag xkr was great

Re: Palmer - agree on the Caterham - fantastic - hated the the Jag though - loads of power but you had no feel of what it would do next. i think you need to be a much better driver than I am. My favourite was the small Renaults? - crash gearbox and slicks. Convinced me you don't need a lot of power to have fun (but it helps!!) Single seaters and twin seat Jags scared the s**t out of me - definitely way above my skill level! - but entertaining....

I should try the Evo - even has four seats right?

1985 Audi UR Quattro

Knocks spots off the scoobie and although the S4 has more power and is much newer it feels detached compared to the UR. Current: I can't say...Oh the Shame!

Caterham Supersport, by far the best driving experience. Proper drivers car, shame they're just so friggin' unreliable. Made do with driving a friends one quite a bit on trackdays, could never be arsed with the bearding required to keep one running though so didn't buy one myself.

VX220 was the best car I've owned in terms of driving experience and fun, SWMBO and I took that down to Monaco and along the Route Napolean it really was the best drive ever. Owned it for 2 years and loved every minute of it.

Owned & driven all sorts of fast cars over the years but one thing's become far more prominant with them all and that's the speed at which you have to go to have 'fun', as the car's themselves have become all the more capable / nannying. The worst one was the 911 C4S I drove last year, great fun car, lovely to drive but completely divorced from reality. They're not 'fun' until the speedo's well and truly the wrong side of any speed limits, same as the Impreza's and Evo's of this world. Any numpty can get into one of those and drive it fast, there's not much skill required to be fairly quick. That's why the Caterhams are so much fun, you don't need to be going fast to have a blast and enjoy the drive, no ABS, traction control or any of that , just pure driving  Ex-G4 Challenge RRS HSE, BV55 YZE. Subtle shade of orange ! Now registered YZE481 G4RRS in Melbourne.

Of cars I have driven but not mine, they would be 1969 Ferrari Dino 246 gt and Jaguar XK120, 2 classic performance cars but have that soul and "something" that modern cars miss.

Its hard because some cars were amazing for their time but now are forgotten, such as the Subaru Impreza, the originals in 1992/93 had 217 bhp (260 on the jap imports), they had better performances than some ferraris or porsches of the time but due to the influx in the early 2000's of cheap 2nd hand Jap imports became a no-no car. I had a 1993 uk model then 1998 WRX STI with 300bhp which believe me were stunning cars for their time.

I know I own one, but the BMW M3 CSL for me is the pinicle of BMW and hence why I speculated and bought one as in my mind will definitetly be a future classic. has the bear minimum needed comforts and luxuries with devastating road holding. RRS TDV8 HSE 2007- JAVA Black/Black interior,
