Just a quick update.
MY10 sport has now done 650 miles, so i thought i would check the oil, it says that i need to add 1.1L of Castrol. which is ok.
The dealer did warn me to check on a regular basis, as one of his customer had blown his engine only a few weeks after ownership because he was not shown how to check the levels.

is 1.1L allot for only 650 miles

have you lot had to put a large amount of oil in yours. ?

The TDV6 engine block absorbs some oil for a while from new, so I wouldn't worry unless it carries on using this amount every 650 miles. You should see this reduce as the engine beds in, and the block ceases to absorb oil.Keep checking it though, as I have heard of an engine completely shot because the owner never lifted the bonnet(dipstick, on a slightly older tdv6) to check anything for several months from new (until it seized that is.)  RRS TDV8 Buck Blue (no, not now in my dreams). ..........D3 TDclankety clankV6 ............BMW 318i

Jay Boy - I have 3000 miles in MY10, checked about 3 times, no oil required yet

Like Tex says i wouldnt panic, my previous Beamers and Audis have done similar up to first service and change of oil etc and then settled a bit using little oil.

Jeep 4.0 High Output XJ 94 6" teraflex lift, c/w rear coils, 9500lb winch, 35" TSL super swamper boggers, safari snorkel, custom made bumpers, tom woods custom double cardon driveshaft, twin electric fans. Don't follow it..............you wont make it. The first 4 x 4 by far.

OK ... so I'll go and read the (French) manual tomorrow, but to satisfy my immediate curiosity in English, how do you check the oil level?

My dealer did not mention this and I assumed, as with my Merc, that an engine with no dipstick would tell the driver when it needed oil. A minor technical challenge, surely?

jump in the car,
press the start button,
then put your foot on the brake,
press top right button,
Scroll down to the service menu,
check oil level,

It will tell you how much to add in litres

I know that these engines can use oil when new (the D3 did, but has now practically stopped). That's why on day 1 of ownership I bought a litre of oil, a paket of wipes and a funnel, which now sit under the floor of the boot. Every silver lining has a cloud

I checked the oil. Initially I had some problem getting the computer to tell me what the oil level was ... until I read the manual and found that the MY10 TDV8 still has a dipstick.  Every silver lining has a cloud
