EGR VALVES!!!!

I recently noticed a loss in power when accelerating, where until the revs got about 2000, the car would just crawl.

I have taken it to Guy Salmon in Knutsford, where they have had it for a week! They told me it was possibly the EGR valave that had gone.

Two days since they initially had it, they rang to tell me it was infact BOTH EGR valves that were sticking and both needed replacing. The cost - £670!

I was then told (on Thursday last week) that it would be ready today. I have just rang them and they were not having it ready until tomorrow. I was angry at this as I needed the car for work and they then told me they would get two engineers on it and have it done for before 6pm today.

I have just had a call back from them to tell me that it now wont be ready as they have found since removing the faulty EGR Valve, that I now need a EGR Intercooler on one of them, as it has gone.

God knows how much that will be, but how do I know this is all correct?

They are now hiring me a courtesy car. Should I be in my right to ask them to keep the parts they are replacing so that I can find out if they were indeed faulty?

I think an EGR is circa £150 and are a common part to fail, chuck in labour at £100 per hour and you are around £600. If your car is before 07 you can just blank them off. If your car is late 06 onwards you cannot blank them.

Have I worded it badly Whistle sorry. Model Year (MY07) cars will notice the EGRs are blanked and show engine fault. Before MY07 no error will show. The MY07 engine is Euro IV, the earlier ones are not.

I have a 55 plate TDV6 myself and recently had exactly the same fault. After a bit of digging I discovered BAS do a blanking kit that does away with the EGR valves totally. This kit is only £50 so I went over last Saturday and had this fitted and the car is 100% again, total cost £117.50. Thumbs Up

Pete at BAS is working on a blanking kit/software for the Euro IV MY07 engines, be great to have the option on later cars to blank them off.

Yes it's legal but obviously if your car was in warranty and you had it fitted LR could refuse any warranty repairs. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
2009 Alaska TDV8 - Gone and much missed.
