South Korea 2009 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey
My Velcrover Sport

I almost wanna call my RRS "Velcrover Sport". Twisted Evil

Why? To try to fix this damm tailgate noise/rattling, I don't know how much velcro I've used. Thank Mr. George de Mestral(velcro inventor).

I've read all the posts in this site regarding the tailgate noise and but it's still making this annoying noise. Big Cry Mine has only 2000 miles on it!

1. I put velcro around upper AND lower latch area.
2. Adjusted 4 rubber buffers(2 on top and 2 on bottom). Like someone said if you wind in/out too much, it still makes noise.
3. Top tailgate repair kit --> I don't know what the hack this is and my dealer doesn't know. They even asked me about related TSB #s! Evil or Very Mad

I'm gonna bring mine in to the dealer with some pictures and TSB #s if I can find them.

Can any of you post up some pics and more detailed solutions for this matter?

thank you much. 09 TDV6 HSE, Stornoway Grey/Black, Sat. DMB/Navi, 2GB memory, Rear view camera, 12 CD/MP3/DVD changer, 35% Lumar tinting, Custom exhaust tips

There was one very old TSB on "Upper Tailgate Support Mounting Rattle" - No. LS501-011 issued 26th January.
2006. I don't think this will be applicable to your newer model though.

I have this picture of the latch with Velcro on both sides (don't know where I got it from, but I thank the owner anyway)..

I don't know what's called exactly but it was something like that.

Anyway, I FINALLY fixed the noise but since I used velcro here and there, I still don't know what was causing this noise. I did find out my upper glass hatch was little bit twisted though.

I knew LRs are not bullet proof in terms of reliability like Lexus but this is... Sad 09 TDV6 HSE, Stornoway Grey/Black, Sat. DMB/Navi, 2GB memory, Rear view camera, 12 CD/MP3/DVD changer, 35% Lumar tinting, Custom exhaust tips

I just got back from the dealer for oil change and complained about the noise from tailgate which I temporarily fixed using velcro. Guess what I heard.

Service manager had similar claim from '06 owner and spent a quite deal of time to find the source of the noise. Then he found out it was caused by electric latch of bottom hatch.

To figure out the problem, he literally took down the bumper and other parts around the latch area. And reassembled them but this time he adjusted the electric latch so it can clamp down little more tightly. Then noise went away! He did this to several other RRSs and it worked everytime.

He said it takes little more time to fix it since he needs to take down the bumper but it will be well worth of trying it. So, hopfully I can get rid of the velcros! He said first claim came from '06 model owner and he fixed it. Maybe depending on the model. 09 TDV6 HSE, Stornoway Grey/Black, Sat. DMB/Navi, 2GB memory, Rear view camera, 12 CD/MP3/DVD changer, 35% Lumar tinting, Custom exhaust tips

Electric tailgate latch was introduced for 07 MY - i.e. from about September 06 onwards. So you can have an 06 registered car that is 07 MY build.

In the case of the FFRR the 'Range Rover for 2006' (i.e. 06 MY) went on sale in April 2005 IIRC.

Hmmm.. this is interesting. I thought all models had electric latches, no?

Maybe you are referring to the power closure feature that was introduced in the later models?
I have not seen any of these "newer" models but this is my understanding..

The newer models are fitted with the power striker unit. This power striker unit is designed to ease closing effort of the tailgate to the fully latched position.

The older models only had a normal striker (non-powered), thus we have to slam our tailgates shut!

However, all tailgates have electric latches - old and new models. This is the latch that is opened (by the integral electric motor) when you press the tailgate release switch. On models with the power striker, this action will also cause the power striker to move (by an integral motor) to the open position .

The electric tailgate latch is installed in the bottom of the tailgate on the vehicle center-line. The striker, powered or otherwise, is installed in the vehicle body on the vehicle center-line.

Considering RRS11's description of what was done, I would believe the service manager did the laborious task of adjusting both the latch and the striker (remember he had to take down the bumper etc.) to their perfect positions so that there is no freeplay to create the noise. As such, I would think this procedure might be applicable to all models, with or without the power closure feature.

My two cents worth... and I stand corrected Laughing Malaysia Boleh!

Must admit Bobby that thought struck me too... I suspect the feature we're talking about here is the "power close" feature of the tailgate on MY07 and later, as famously depicted in Kaine's video Wink

Yes, I was talking about "power striker" and latch. He said he didn't plan on fixing the noise problem initially. Instead he's working on something else that required taking down the bumper. During this work, he also had to disassemble other parts including the latch/striker and after putting these all back together, owner said the noise's gone! Shocked so, he suspected the noise's coming from loose engagement between striker and latch. Interesting story... 09 TDV6 HSE, Stornoway Grey/Black, Sat.
