Nope, it still will not charge the iPhone 3G, and it may even ruin the original iPhone. It seems that there is a special lead for the iPhones, and older chargers actually fry the unit. Watch out. and please only buy the certified 3G chargers.

EEK! Burning cd's sounds more appealing all of a sudden.

I am sure someone out there will have a solution beyond the aux in behind the centre console. Don't wanna fry my iphone as it has my little black book on it.

I saw a solution that put out an FM signal earlier that seemed suitable. I have an iphone in car charger anyway so that might be a decent short term fix. Its all kinda irrelevant anyway as I go off to Tignes skiing four days after I take delivery of the car so I won't need to worry about it for a week. WINNER - 2009 Best Newcomer Award

Hi Wozz, welcome aboard!!

Unfortunately the XS doesn't have the Aux socket behind the cubby Big Cry so the only option is a 'connectivity module' of some sort. Being a franchise dealer i can only recommend the LR kit, but I can vouch that the LR kit does charge the 3g and mine hasn't been fried!

You're supplying dealer should do you a decent deal if you are still yet to pick up the new toy!!

All the best,

James Thumbs Up

I think as well that the LR kit is great. I know it just handles the normal iPod functions, but it works, and it looks good. I have the cradle to the immediate right of the steering wheel, and can monitor the iPod screen.

I know that when you put in the iPhone 3G, it looks like it charges, and I thought it did, but then on my latest outing, a 3 hours drive to Zurich and back, I was using the iPhone for verifying the speed etc., and it was using the GPS module all the way, and it ran flat. The little green lightning is lit up, as if it is charging, but to no good.

Also, it was not the 3Gs that were getting fried, but the original iPhone. The new 3Gs have a build-in "fuse" to prevent over charging. The original does not! Hence, a lot people learned that the hard way. They travelled to the US, or bought one over EBay, and then they tried charging them in their iPod car chargers, and it basically fried them, turning your newly bought USD400 iPhone into an expensive brick.

I need to find a smart way of charing my 3G when in the car, as well as cradle. As it does not work in the LR cradle (at least for me), I will just continue using my iPod Classic (160GB) in it. Hence I need another solution for my iPhone. In addition to various GPS solutions it also has a smart little SCDB connected application, and of course it is awesome to be using Google Earth while driving in the mountains:)

killerBob,

It definitely does charge the 3g iPhone as I was fully reliant on 'car-charging' for a few days earlier in the year. I guess that depending on what application you're using at the time, there is a chance that you're using more battery than the car is able to replace, especially if it's continually checking GPS.

James Thumbs Up
