Range Rover Exhilaration By Appointment

Tomorrow I am attending a day organised by Landrover that I was invited to in which I get to test drive to the MAX Range Rovers and Range Rover Sports on a runway test track.

This is not aimed at being an off road event but an on road handling and all out performance test such as maximum straight line speed, acceleration, corning and braking. There will be some light off road driving too and lunch is included.

I'll try and get some good pictures and let you know how it goes. L319 D4 HSE

Well, what a fantastic day. This is how all LandRover hospitality should be. Here's the agenda of proceedings:

Agree with WW, that white HST looks great.

The place this was held was an ex MOD Tank proving and training ground, so it has some excellent obstacles which we rock crawled over. There was a long stretch of currugated concrete road which at 10mph was really bumpy and harsh. If you accelerated to 25mph it smoothed out as the suspension got into rythm with the bumps, apparently at 60mph it goes almost totally smooth.

We also got to do that thing where you balance the car on two opposite wheels, drove down a 1:1 slope using HDC then back up it. Most people just floored it all the way but my instructor told me to get on the slope and stop. once facing skyward he said "Just floor it now and keep your foot down". From a standing start on a 45 degree 1:1 upward slope the car still took off, truly awesome those torques

With regards to the two cars and back to back driving, was a very interesting experience. It was nice being back in the Sport, it handles SO well and that TDV8 is different somehow, growlier perhaps. The fast slalom was great fun in the Sport, we were allowed to go as fast as we liked, whereas Landrover requested only 25mph in the FFRR to avoid wheels lifting at the rear!

I thought the performance of both was truly brilliant, they both get off the mark brilliantly. The FF is certainly a little wallowy compared but it has been stiffened up. Braking performance was immense. I'd never believe that a car so big and heavy could stop so quickly from 70mph, those Brembos did their work.

It has made me wonder if I would enjoy going back to a Sport, just because of the way it handles compared to the larger version. It still has issues though, the rear tailgate is annoying, still! It creaked on the test car all the time although they blamed it on someone slamming it with something stuck in it. The test car also had the alcantara seats which were very nice. Don't know how much they cost as an option.

After being used to the size and comforts in the FFRR the Sport is always going to be a compromise for me, it would be handling and performance over practicality. The Sport we drove all day had the Shadow Chrome 20" alloys, in fact all vehicles were on the 20" rims. I asked the LR instructor how long they last off road and his reply was "about ten minutes". Nothing changed then! Having said that, the shadow chrome wheels looked stunning, much nicer than the plain silver ones I had on my SC.

One thing that he said to me about the way LR decided on how to market the Sport against the FFRR. He said "when you drive a sport the controls and dash are straight in front of you, you look directly at them, whereas in the FFRR you look down at the controls, and that is how it is meant to be because in a Range Rover you always look down on everything else whereas in the Sport you've not yet made it there..."

When I had my RRS SC, there was that horrible wobbly banging noise underneath when you went over bumps at low speed, especially cross-axle manouevres. I didn't notice that in the Sport we drove so maybe some advances have been made.

I also didn't have the squeaky front suspension bushes! (Crikey, I'd almost forgotten all about these little niggly problems)

We did keep taking nice cold bottles of water out of the centre console fridge though. Nice. L319 D4 HSE

It would seem just about anyone can get on these days somehow, there was one chap there who owned a Vauxhall Corsa. Hardly the Range Rover driver of the future, he'd put his name down on some list and seemed to be an eternal freebie hunter, said he goes to all sorts of manufacturer days. L319 D4 HSE
