STILL LOOKING FOR AN UNLOCKED 16Gb iPHONE!!!

Browsing the net, found an article on BBC website stating that iPhones which ahve been unlocked, once you update software on them there is something in the code which will lock the phone and render it 'An expensive paperweight'

Then, hackers have hit back and said they know how to get around this should it happen but only recommends it done by those who know the coding of the iPhone (Obviously, that includes me but i'm posting this for the benefit of others )

So, if I were to be able to get one, where would I stand.

Have found a website in the US which 'Claims' to have unlocked 16Gb iPhones in white and black.

They stipulate a minimum $value order which equates to 3 x iPhones at around £260 each. This would obviously mean a group buy (If they even have the phones in stock!)

I haven't progressed with the site as they want you to register to proceed (Which I wouldn't want to unless it was a go-er) so there would probably be a delivery charge on top of that.

So just wondering if anyone would be interested at this stage and if it seems reasonable or overpriced? Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award

1. The quickest and easiest way of getting hold of the 16Gb is from France....they are not allowed to lock them there, so you would be able to use out of the box.

2. If you get one in the UK, albeit from somewhere like Fleabay, it is unlikely to have v2.0 software if it IS unlocked, it will still be running on the 1.1.4 s/w. What this means is, nothing detremental really, just that some of the features will be based on the old s/w version....this may or may not impact some features of your beloved IPhone....from forum entries elsewhere, people are now screaming out for the v2 s/w. 3G and all that !!

The solution. Buy a 1.1.4 version from Fleabay and re-jailbreak it....its now fully available and the hack is idiot proof. What you musn't do is update from ITunes once you have hacked. Simple.

From what I can see, the 16Gb version is still going for silly money, so unless you carry around 3 zillion albums, I would opt for the somewhat cheaper 8Gb and just hack that...............I did not do that, I fell into the pit of the 18 month contract simply because I could not wait

There are kernel extensions available using the I/O interface, but for that you would be in the realms of development and be identifying pin outs and such like.

1. ST - it means that unless Apple release a newer version of the IPhone s/w (which is unlikely) you SHOULD NOT use the updater via ITunes IF you jailbreak the phone. If you did, nothing dramatic would happen, but you would need to re-jailbreak it and apply any installed apps you have well, installed !! In English - Do NOT update.

2. The device can be used as per normal, you can still upload and sync via ITunes as per normal, just do NOT update the s/w as per above.

For clarity - update s/w refers to Firmware on the device and NOT personal content.
