| That makes sense, but how then is one particular battery operating a specific function (such as stop-start)? If they are connected in parallel, why wouldn't the batteries share the load? |

Stop/start is not an option on any new IC engined car - it is EU compulsory.

I've looked on the LR configurator, at the E-Brochure and my paper brochure and Stop/Start isn't mentioned for any of the engine variants! You might have to contact your dealership to find out.
