Power Loss & Strange Noise

While driving home last night, I had a loss of power and the display showed "Engine System Fault" (or something very similar) whenever I tried to accelerate. It got slower and slower until I was going not much more than jogging pace (it was an empty country road), so I stopped and stopped the car and restarted.
That seemed to fix it, but it became clear that it still wasn't completely right. Then when I tried to overtake a car and the the engine was put under load, I heard a rather loud howling sound. It was quite alarming the first time I heard it as I didn't know what it was. It sounded similar the the noise a balloon makes when you pinch the neck and let the air our, only much, much louder.
I've been out in the car again today and it seems fine. Anyone else experienced this or anything similar?

Hi Paul,

I don't think we have wastegates , i think it's done in software these days .
It sounds like a hose has blown off or the clip is loose which lets all the lovely turbo'd air to escape.
The ecu sees that there is low boost pressure (cos it's all leaking out) and gives you the dash warning.

The noise is the giveaway.

It's worth having a look around with a torch looking for loose pipes.
LR assist should come out to that and be fixed in a jiffy.

Just hope it's not the turbo cracked or about to explode Big Cry

Good luck

I would have it chqed asap , it may be an actual turbo fault at worst, or at best a simple hose leak.

Regards pete
