What Car Twin Test - X5 3.0 v TDV8 RRS

I picked up the May issue of What car? this afternoon and it has a short test/ twin test of the X5 3.0td versus the TDV8 RRS in it............................................

They note
RRS weighs in a lot heaviler than the X5
RRS is by far the more refined - engine has little more than a hum at tickover and a deep V8 warble under load compared to the X5's raspy and rattly diesel lump

They reckon the RRS makes more wind noise than a tornado! (I've never noticed ANY wind noise in mine!)

BMW has the sportier imagine but is infact a lot "softer" especially at low speeds
Once free of the town the RRS seems to shed it's lard, it can be placed very accurately on the road and hussled along with no more effort than a family car - they reckon the BMW is even better though.

BMW is a better "TEAM BUS" whereas the RRS is a relaxed cruiser for 4!

Verdict is predictable - BMW only just beats the RRS.

Pity they didn't try the BM offroad.............................. the verdict might have been the other way round! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

The BMW can seat 7 with the optional 3rd row of seats whereas the RRS can only seat 5, but a small person has to sit in the middle of the rear bench of an RRS so really it's only 4! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

X5 with 7 seats is in D3 territory but looses hopelessly Mr. Green It is just that your sports should be done under the trade description act, because lets face it they are many things but not sporty (ducks for cover) especially the TDV6 and even the SC isn't that quick if we are honest is it. So you have a car that carrys the RR name but isn't luxurious in the RR sense, isn't sporty because even S's little BMW is quicker, can only carry 4 people easily, has a poxy little boot and you can't even picnic on the tailgate because it has got a volvo estate tailgate Rolling with laughter Porsche Cayenne S Diesel 66 Plate

United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Rimini Red

Next door's X5 sporty thing has turned up recently so I finally made myself go and look at it yesterday. OK so she is nicely finished (in a slightly garish fashion), she drives very efficently (in a slightly overly efficent fashion) she is quick (in a rather harsh and somehow too urgent fashion) and she looks good (in a how shiny and bulbous am I sort of way). But, I didn't like her one bit and certainly wouldn't want to swap for my TDv8.

X5's have totally different genes from a RRS. They come from a different family, different lineage and as a result their appeal is quite quite different. If you are a Beemer person you probably think I am talking gibberish here. But if you have had Land Rovers before you may feel like me, that the RRS is the only vehicle in this class that would ever "feel right". RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini

Oh, good god.... we all know LR products knock the "competition" into a cocked hat when it comes to getting muddy wheels. But a lot of prospective RRS owners are the same folk that would normally be buying into X5s, MLs and Cayennes. I would bet Mrs S's latest handbag on the fact that 95% of these people will never entertain doing any offroading. Therefore they score the cars on how well they drive on the road.... the new X5 handles excellently (as did the old one) and the Cayenne is even better if you ask me. It's just a shame that it's more aesthetically pleasing to look at a pool of day old dog sick, than it is to look at a Cayenne.

I wish we could get out of the "You own a LR, so why don't you offroad it?" mentality. Most people buy a car because they like it, not because it'll be good offroad.

PS: I like the way my poxymobile is quicker than an RRS Rolling with laughter Thumbs Up
