Purchased a set of Quad exhausts. Took them to the bodyshop to install. After several hours and attempts, the supplier advised the bodyshop to remove the factory installed weights hanging under the RRS which were preventing the exhausts from fitting properly. Should I allow this? What are these weights there for? 2006 4.4 HSE, Java black, Alpaca beige int, super charged grill and vents, dvd headrest, fridge, bluetooth, etc

They are called "harmonic mass dampers".

I wouldn't allow anyone to mess with them. Even if they are moved slightly to enable the exhaust tips to be fitted, they could end up knocking against the rear bumper or the newly modified exhaust system which would give you a horrendous noise inside the car. Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. Aspen Leather, Cherry Wood, Privacy Glass, PTI, Tow Pack, Mudflaps, Tasmods, a new Fuelflap, a RRSport.co.uk umbrella in the boot & a RRSport.co.uk sticker on the rear glass.

They're used to stop unnecessary vibrations damaging the car over periods of time - a lot of cars have these, but not always quite so obvious. Don't get anyone to move them - it will all end in tears  

They are fitted to all RR Sports and Discovery 3, nothing to do with the dynamic response.

I'd be surprised if they weigh more than four kilos never mind anything like 400 kilo. I think the extra weight has something to do with the big black chassis that the weights are bolted too.  Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. Now im no engineer but....

I was just watching this documentary on the Burj Al Arab hotel in dubai. When they wind tunnel tested the building they realised under certain wind conditions something called vortex shredding happens (mini tornados are created as the wind goes around the building which can cause great vibrations/pulling force on the panels which can eventually shake a building to pieces). They used suspended weights in the exoskeleton to counteract it, which just reminded me of these weights . So i would assume that maybe the same conditions can be replecated on a range. Especially at the higher speeds?

Either way even this theory comes back to vibrations
