Anybody fancy a holiday a long way ooop north?

I have always wanted to go to Iceland for a holiday after I worked there for a year. I had planned to go there last year but due to me changing ships it didn't happen.
If you watch these videos you'll get an idea of how much fun it would be! Apart from no RRSports in evidence see if you notice what else there is a distinct lack of................................

&feature=related

You need to plan on at least 3 weeks to a month off work and the round trip ferry fare from Scotland is in excess of a £1000..................... DSL did it a couple of years ago in a Defender, but if D3's and Freelander1's can cope then why not a few RRS's. One thing - you have to be prepared to do a bit of camping as hotels and B&B's are not exactly 10 a penny in the outback of Iceland. Much more fun than following all those D3's down to Morocco..............................

The missing bits are - no rain, no trees and not a vast amount of sunshine......................... 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Of course you could tell her that you are taking her to the desert as Iceland has it's own one in the SE of the island, you just happen not to mention that it isn't a hot and sunny desert - actually Iceland is often warmer than the UK as it is more in the Gulf Stream than us and it can be relatively warm there in the summer but hardly the Costas or the Balearic Islands................................ 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Dormant for nearly 18 months and somebody is looking for Iceland holidays! I'm still up for it and I'm sure that with the financial crisis in Iceland it will be significantly cheaper now than it was 2 years ago! There is one big problem.......................... I'm sure I read somewhere recently that the ferry service between Iceland and the Faroes has been discontinued. Certainly flights from Glasgow to Reykjavik have reduced from daily to two a week this winter. The ferry company is Smyril Line http://www.smyril-line.com/ICELAND/PACKAGE...eland.aspx

Here is the ferry timetable - you have to look at the Torshafen to Iceland for this route, the Scrabster to Thorshaven is done on Northlink Ferries 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I came acros the topic by searching the forum last night and decided to give it a go.
Tim and Alicatt when would you be up for this? How many do we want/need to be (both cars and people wise)?
I will try to do some search on the provided web site and flights later today to get feel for prices.

Coko most folks do it on an individual basis within a group - the ferries companies don't give discount for groups of cars Big Cry Personnally I would be looking to go in August as that would fit in with my work schedule - you need a 3 weeks to a month really to see the whole island and the ferry trip back takes longer than the trip out because of the way the timetable work - IIRC you have to spend 2 nights in Thorsahven coming back.
If you google "Iceland round tour" or "Driving Iceland" you will find some interesting info like the regs for offroading (strictly controlled, but most of the roads are only ash anyway so everywhere is "ofroad")
Remember that from the SE of England you have a nigh on 700 mile trip up the UK to get to the Aberdeen/ Orkney ferry too before you get on the Orkney/Faroes ferry! You spend nearly a week of the trip on ferries getting there and back!

There is this pre-planned tour for Euro 2890 which includes ferries and hotels and is for 2 people travelling in the same car I think. http://www.smyril-line.com/ICELAND/PACKAGE...ute_5.aspx
Here are the conditions for the above - looks a good arrangement http://www.smyril-line.com/ICELAND/PACKAGE...rices.aspx 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

That sounds great! Thumbs Up

Are you asking for 2009 or 2010? Question

I'd love to have one or two weeks of holiday in Scotland and then three weeks in Iceland, that sounds perfect! Cool But unfortunately not in 2009 and I can't tell yet if it could work in 2010. So, if you also plan to do it in 2010 ask again in about 3-4 months!
