Winter Tyre Advice

Advice please :-

I run 20" LR OEM alloys and would like to fit good winter tyres.

Therefore; please advise the best Winter Tyre (and approximate cost) for 20" rims.
(is there a good low profile winter tyre for example?)

And whether or not i should be fitting smaller (winter rims) I have Brembos.

Obviously I'd like to spend as little as possible but I am reminded that standard tyres are poor below below approx 7 degrees centigrade.

Maybe Smarticus advice still holds true?

2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

The subject has been done several times Paulo, but it isn't a stupid question and worth coming back to.

I bought a set of the 19" Pirelli Snow and Ice 3 weeks ago and put them on a set of LR V6 HSE style wheels that I bought from Salmon Fisher, they are going onto the car next week so no doubt we will have several inches of snow tomorrow and Monday down here! I haven't used them before but after some very nasty moments on the OEM 18" Contis that were on my V6 SE I was determined that I wasn't going to repeat them this winter on the 20's on the V8. My V8 runs Pirelli's as the OEM tyre and in the 4000 miles I have put on them in the last 5 weeks I feel more confident with them in the wet than I did with the Contis. I did consider the Goodyear MTR's but they seem to be very difficult to get hold of and they are Mud tyres, not Snow and Ice tyres specifically designed to be used at low temperature. Certainly the tread pattern on the Pirelli S&I will give them some offroad ability. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I got mine from Budget, Whitehouse Road, Springkerse, Stirling, FK7 7SS. Tel 01786 464949
The guys there are really helpful - they may have an outlet up your way too. There is no website mentioned on the paperwork that I have. They were selling them at 25% discount when I bought mine! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Norway 2010 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Bali Blue

I run Pirelli Scorpion Sow & Ice 275/45/20 on 20" 10 spoke original rims. The Pirelli tyres are very good on dry snow, but not very good when the snow gets wet, and I also find them very slippery on ice. However, I'm not sure if any other tyre performs better in such conditions.
I think one should really consider if 20" in 275 witdh at all is a good choice when it comes to winter tyres. With a car weighing almost 2,5 tons the ,wheel/tyre set up is not an easy choice, and I have experienced these tyres to be very slippery in wet and icy conditions. A 19" (or maybe even 18") set up would provide more grip, but can't beat the looks of 20". 2010 RRS TDV6 3,0, Bali Blue/Tan/Anigre/Dynamic Pack/Logic7/Keyless entry/Paddle

Ersa, there's a problem if you have Brembos - 19" is the smallest wheel that you can use from Land Rover, Compomotive do a special 18" wheel for the Bowler Nemisis that will also fit as it was specifically developed to fit Brembo equipped Nemisis which is loosely based on the RRS S/C 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Tim, I know the Brembos limit the possibility to choose 19" for the winter tyres. In any case, safe driving on a slippery surface is solely the drivers responsebility.
In Norway and the other Nordic countries, we have the option to run on studded tyres. I choose not to do so because road noise is so severe and you're also penalized with extra road tax in the cities. 2010 RRS TDV6 3,0, Bali Blue/Tan/Anigre/Dynamic Pack/Logic7/Keyless entry/Paddle

United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Rimini Red

Drove over Dunmail Raise in The Lakes yesterday in about 3 inches of slush. My car (on Pirrelli Scorpion Ice & Snow 19" tyres) felt completely comfortable and drama free, which was anything but the case for some other cars who were definitely "struggling". I later learnt that there was a very nasty looking crash on that stretch of road where it appeared that a car had lost control and crossed into the path of a car coming in the other directon. RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini

Germany 2006 Range Rover Sport TDV6 SE Cairns Blue

Pirelli Scorpion are superb, in my opinion. They give off more road noise in the wet, as does any snow tyre. Living here, in Bavaria and commuting to Austria on a weekly basis (often using the untreated "B" roads as they are quieter and more fun) I can assure you that the tyres have been nothing short of superb. They are particularly excellent on the roads that are higher up in the Alps and it is great going past signposts saying no vehicles unless with snow chains or 4wd.

I do not know how they perform in the "lightweight, girly-type" of winter conditions that you get in the UK but can only emphasise how they perform in an Alpine winter. Razz

If they are good enough for the alps and southern germany then they are well up to the job of the 5cm of snow a year the UK gets! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
