First 4wd experience on sand

Hi All,
I did my first bit of four wheel driving on the Sunshine Coast in my RRS this week (at Teewah beach for those Aussies who know it). I got the vehicle ferry at Tewantin and before I attempted to access the beach I lowered the tyre pressures to 30psi, raised the suspension, engaged the sand mode and low range and attacked the soft sand at the access point! I had forgotten to disengage the DSC and when I hit the sand (probably a little too fast) the RRS was squirming all over the place (frightened a Toyota coming the other way) but made it through easily. The beach was easy and fun driving but as the tide was coming up a bit so we decided to cross back to Rainbow beach using Freshwater road. Here the driving became a lot more serious than I expected. There were long stretches of very soft sand with very deep wheel ruts. I kept the wheels spinning slowly as I progressed through them (DSC off this time) but at about halfway through came to a point where the car almost stopped and became bogged. Each time his happened the car would suddenly regain traction and I would progress out the other side. Do any of you experienced with sand know if this is the RRS electronics becoming clever or just pure luck? Overall I had a lot of fun and was surprised how far I got with conventional tyres (wrangler f1). Soft sand meant I didn’t damage any of the underside although the trees got a bit close at times. Trying to drive over sand ruts causes the car to head all over the place so you really seem to have to drive with them and hope you don’t just become a huge sand plough! Didn’t spot one Range Rover down there, 99.9 percent Toyotas with the odd Suzuki or Nissan.
Cheers,
Anthony

Try airing down to 15-18 psi next time, you will get a lot better traction and less "squirming" on soft sand. Yes, your tires will look almost flat. Trust me, it works. Bring a good compressor for when you get out of it! Smile

Got any pictures?

i would have gone lower on the psi but I had a pretty crappy compressor so I thought I would try 30 and go lower if necessary. I was too busy driving to get a pic of freshwater road but attached is a pic to show I was really there Razz

I finished it off the next day with a trip straight home. 1100 km's in 12.5 hours. Included 3 stops, one to wash the car down. Could have almost done it on one tank!

Red, see my post here http://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/topic8034.html i was sorely tempted to attempt the single tank trip, i live less than 10 mins drive from the end of the F3. Was up there looking to buy a property around Tewantin, Peraigan, Noosa only 2 weeks ago..Is yours a V6 or V8 ??

I was unaware of any local beach driving options in the vicinity Rolling Eyes maybe next time.. Another Pommie Bar Steward down under

Hi Zilch,
Yeah plenty of local beach drives including Fraser Island etc. Mine is a TDV6 and I was averaging 7.5 l/100km although I am not convinced the computer is accurate. Either that, or the bowsers need calibrating.

Hi red, just read your post regards finding traction at the last moment. I think you'll find your RRS was bottomed out, in that case theTerrain Response 'detects' this and raises the vehicle a further 23mm in the 'Extended' mode IIRC this would then provide you with the added traction by distributing the weight back onto the tyres not the underside of the vehicle...

Beautiful scenery by the way, hope to have some photos of the beaches around Muscat soon and the mountains also...

Have a good one All!!!

Guy

Hi Guy,
You could be right. It didn't feel that deep but it is conceivable it had gradually dug itself down to the axles. I just kept the wheels gently spinning and never completely lost momentum.
cheers,
