Low fuel pressure “ mystery “

Hi everyone
So I was wondering if anyone can help as I am really really struggling with are much hated / loved sport which for almost the last three years has had this mystery’s untraceable low fuel pressure fault on hard ish acceleration or lately some times just driving when the car has warms up causing limp mode.

I’ll try and keep it short as over the last three years it’s a very long story !
the vehicle is a 2007 Range Rover sport 2.7 tdv6 with only 86,000 miles one day the high pressure fuel pump faulted suddenly causing the vehicle not to start so I personally replaced the high pressure fuel pump and the injection with genuine Land Rover / VDO pump and injectors, all went fine and the car fired up straight away “ all fixed or so I thought / where all the fun began !! Big Cry “ after about ten minutes of driving the car out the shed and letting it sit running in went in to limp mode for “ high fuel pressure “ and then when I tried driving it when you accelerated over 2,500 rpm for a few seconds it would go straight in to limp mode again this time for low fuel pressure!.

After struggling for a few months I then put it to my local garage that works on Land Rover most weeks they had it for two months and couldn’t understand why it was showing low pressure on the rail under acceleration then some days high pressure on the rail when left idling so they gave up with it !.

Them it want to a local Land Rover specialist over 100 miles away they had it for OVER 7 MONTHS and couldn’t fix it ! , they then changed the intank fuel pump , fuel rail pressure sensor, two fuel filters , return pips , but couldn’t get the fuel pressure to meet spec at any rpm always far too low and constant rising and failing , so they also had to give up and transport the vehicle back to me !

So eventually I then decided to have it transported to my nearest Land Rover mean dealer who have had it OVER 6 MONTHS now returned it twice “ fixed “ but I only got 30 miles the first time before going in limp mode took it straight back seconds time only 10 miles before limp mode and again straight back with it but now they are really stumped and have not touched it in months ! after spending thousands with them they also can’t fix it.
Over that 6 months they changed the high pressure fuel pump again , the intank fuel pump again , fuel pressure sensor again , fuel filters again , and engine ECU , also tested all the wiring multiple times but can’t find the root cause.

So yeah sorry for this long jumbled story tried to keep it short ish but if anyone has had something similar or has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated! ,it is so annoying how no one can fix this it’s costing an absolute fortune! and no other garages I’ve tried will even take it now !

Fault codes
P0087-00
P0088-00
P2290-00
P000E-22
And much more !

Thanks James

Try changing the fuel cap on your fuel tank

Hi thanks for your reply

Yeah we have already ruled that out by driving with the cap off and had the 2 tank breathers checked when the tank was dropped to change the fuel pump. 2017-Discovery 5 TDV6 HSE

You need to put a pressure gauge onto the fuel rail to make sure that you are “really” getting correct pressure readings

Hi !
Well the car is currently back at the dealer for the third time , I would of hoped that they would of already checked the rail pressure with a gauge on the bleed valve before they changing the fuel pumps “ but you never know “ ! . I’ll have to ask them if the rail pressure is matching what the diagnostics is showing , but they have already changed the pressure sensor and tested the sensor wiring back to the ECU and to the fuse box so I would hope that the sensors readings would be accurate ?. 2017-Discovery 5 TDV6 HSE

Have they replaced the rail the fuel pressure sensor goes into? Just curious as it’s been revised twice. Could also have something in it from the fuel pump failure. That’s where I’d be looking with the list of things you’ve done so far. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

I am currently away overseas from home, so I cannot be 100% sure. But something like the GapII tool may be able to monitor fuel pressures in real-time. That would be of help hopefully.

Hi
Well the specialist it was at changed the sensor only for an aftermarket one just too see but it made no difference so they put the original one back in , then the dealer changed it for a genuine one but they come from Land Rover with the fuel rail attached !, as like a hole peace unit but at about £400 pound !
But still made no difference to why is shows low and sometimes high fuel pressure. 2017-Discovery 5 TDV6 HSE

Hi
Yes I got an IID TOOL like 5 years ago , one of the best things I ever bought especially when you have two Land Rovers it’s almost used weekly ! Laughing

It’s great for reading the fault codes and looking at live data but all I can tell is that the fuel rail pressure is running two low ,starts of fine at 27,000 kpa once the car is first started but after a few minutes of driving the pressure slowly drops down the only 23,000 kpa and it shows very rough pressure when left to ideal ?
So yeah it’s great but don’t think it can help point to the cause ?
