Storing tow hitch in boot - am I being stupid?

So I bought a used detachable tow hitch, and I've found the place it lives in the tray under the boot floor.

But.... When the hitch isn't fitted to the car, I can't remove the key (which I believe is correct). But this means that the key stops the hitch sitting fully into it's storage area, which means the boot floor panel won't sit back down.

Am I being stupid?? Very Happy 2011 Range Rover Sport HSE, 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6, 2008 Porsche Cayenne S, 1998 Lotus Elise S1

Can certainly remove the key from mine when hitch not fitted, and stow it in the car no problem.

Cheers

Should be able to remove the key when detached.

I see someone else with trim clips in their emergency kit. Thumbs Up

I have some too along with various sizes of tie-wrap, bulbs, wheel nuts, tyre inflator. Much of it lives under the rear seat along with jump leads, tow rope, fire extinguisher. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I dumped the crappy wheel brace and replaced it with a breaker bar and deep reach six sided impact socket.

This is what happened to mine just undoing a wheel nut that was not over tight - I now use a better wheel brace.

Gotta have the essentials in case something happens. Couple regular bulbs in the small brown box in case an LED bulb fails, zip ties stashed under the rags/first aid kit, have a pair of good work gloves in there as well. Nothing quite like the cuts of a hundred steel belts after a blowout to let you know how important gloves are in a car. Also managed to get the LR cargo net and tie downs cheap so those are in the back as well.

Yes, the long green plastic case is a genuine LR warning triangle.

I was shopping for a genuine LR first aid kit, but the ones I found didn’t meet the new German first aid kit requirements. Ended up getting the one in there now which isn’t too bad for the price.

I think my hitch still has the key in it, can check in a minute, but pretty sure it does. Also have the red plastic plug in the receiver when the hitch isn’t in use. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

The LR first aid kit is ridiculously expensive for what it is. A decent after-market one would always be my choice - likewise the fire extinguisher they have as an optional extra.

I have a Tow Trust removeable bar so there is a good chunk of metal permanently fitted and then a chunky slot in bar to fit when required. So the socket in the rear cross member is occupied all the time by the bolt-in TT item. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Yeah, but you do get a nice bracket to mount it with Rolling with laughter Mine now lives in the boot without the bracket, instead of the mildly inconvenient place L/R fitted it, well for her indoors anyway. Laughing

Which aren’t they just a Gloria 1kg fire extinguisher that sells for like £25-30? 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

Yeah, but it also has Land Rover on it so that quadruples the price, and then you have the very nice extra mounting bracket which also has land rover stamped on it as well so that's an extra £75.00. Rolling with laughter

Cheers

So true Col. Same with parts on the 3.0, parts from PSA are 1/2 what LR charges for the exact same part. Only difference is the box it comes in. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

The key doesn’t come out with the hook unlocked, if it’s got the original red flat head key it should fit in, mines had a replacement lock with a standard key which sticks out so I spring the lock mechanism into the locked position and pull the key out then it fits in the boot.

Tap the pin on the towbar to spring the lock mech. Steve
