Aircon issue… cold for passenger, warm for me…

Anyone suffered this issue? 2020 L494 Aircon working fine until recently..was working hard for two weeks on our trip around southern Italy in 35-40 degree heat..
Got home and almost immediately I got the feeling that it wasn’t working properly.. last couple of warm days in the UK I have been slowly stewing..
Aircon on left side of car working perfectly.. with cool air coming out of all the left hand vents.. however on the drivers side vents it is blowing out warm air…
Thoughts? In the old days I would have said a blend motor but I am unfamiliar with latest JLR products? Is there a split channel on 494 compressors? Does it use a second rad? Etc etc..

Grateful for opinions!
FC…

Eh up,

Just a thought as I had the same on my BMW HVAC system, was the stepper motor that went?

Same symptoms as you have.

I am sure someone on here with more knowledge will be able to assist better but hope this is at least something to consider

HTH

That’s what I am hoping it is ….however I am surprised it knocks out all right hand vents.. if it was that I thought it would only affect one of the vents but this is windscreen, face and side vents and footwell vents as well…
The car still has the approved warranty on it and thus a stepper motor is a warranty issue but a hole in one of the condenser rads is likely to cost me large…

Eh up

I’m no expert on air con ( other than tonight when I refilled my E90 with a DIY kit and worked a treat)

Not sure if a split system on yours with condensers serving each side, could be but would mean over complicated systems.

Does all other HVAC systems work other than air con on drivers side?

Can you use a temp gun to get readings just to make sure even on hot it’s balanced, also have you tried air con switched on but turn temperature up so it’s heating .

See if it’s still balanced with heat running through

Hope that makes sense

👍

Not a RRS but I had a the same problem with my Ford Transit Connect. A simple re gas sorted it out so could be something as simple as that.

Thanks all… currently at the dealers as hopefully it’s still warrantied

Searching the forum it does appear to be a common problem and as John has highlighted and confirmed by the dealer it is low on gas and apparently and I don’t know why, when it is low cool air comes out one side only…
The dealer now reports that it is blowing warm out of both sides… the issue now becomes where is it leaking from.. I am hoping that it’s not the condenser rad which is unlikely to be covered..

Fortunately it’s timing is perfect.. just got back from a grand tour of Italy where it was coping well on days where we had 40 degree heat.. back in Blighty where it’s rainy and miserable and it gives up the ghost… maybe it’s depressed?

Right everybody I now have a definitive answer… it was a split condenser rad. The loss of Aircon gas/fluid was creating the cold on one side through the air vents issue. So John and TTR were both right!
Thank you!

Even better was that it was covered under warranty as it was a split rad and not a holed rad! The condenser rad is the large one at the bottom. If you look through the lower front bumper grills it is that one..

So well pleased as my car temp is nice and chilly again!
Thanks all and hope this thread helps others in future!
