Got 20", want 19"

Hello all,
Just got a 2012 SDV6 HSE luxury, to go along with the two P38 4.6L vogues.
It's got 20" (snowflakes I think) They are very tidy for 10 year old (must have been refurbished).



I don't like oversized wheels and low profile tyres.
I think a wheel arch looks better filled with a tyre rather than a wheel with a rubber band round it.
They give less protection to the wheel (potholes, kerbs etc)
The less flexible sidewalls give a harsher ride.
The less flexible sidewalls also give a smaller footprint, especially when pressures are lowered for poor surface conditions.
The lower the profile, the more suppliers think they can charge for the tyres.

So the looks are personal opinion, but all the rest is fact.
I'm therefore seeking 19" wheels. 18"s would have been preferable but don't clear the calipers.
Pity, cause I've got quite a few 18" double five spokes from my P38s.

Anyway, I would like to consider a swap.
If anyone with reasonably tidy 19" wheels fancies upping to 20" ( two nearly new tyres and two half worn) then let me know.
I'm in Argyll, so realistically I mean anyone in Scotland !

Not all 19s fit over Brembos, so be aware.

PD1881s fit over Brembos (18") but not likely on a swap. HWN has another 18"steel wheel, can't recall the make.

Don't think they are brembo's but how would I be sure?
Mine are a pretty standard looking two pot caliper, and the pads have a weird circular lump of metal at one end of the outer pad?
My 20" presently have about an inch of clearance, so plenty to come in half an inch to 19".
Even if the 19" had a different shaped valley, there is still a bit to spare.

These are probably my preferred option.
I've seen these referred to as snowflake as well?

I'm quite sure L/R referred to that rim as 5 V Spoke Alloy "Style 1" on the 10/13 L320, if you do have Brembo callipers it will be quite obvious with the 6 pot as they are rather large Laughing don't think it will be the 4 pot either unless someone has retro fitted them as I think they stopped fitting them when they introduced the facelift RRS1 even on the last of the facelift TDV8's.

Can you not fit a deeper depth tyre for more tyre in the arch as another option, unless you're set on moving away from those alloys you've got. What size tyres do you have fitted at the mo?. 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

It would certainly be easier to make a move if my present wheels were scruffy. Rolling Eyes I also like the present style as it looks strong and easy to clean. I can't see any sign of it as a 19" though.

I'd prefer to stick to a "standard" tyre size if possible.
Insurance will use the slightest reason to escape paying up.
Going up or down even one profile step can alter the gearing noticeably (5%), and I have used this facility in the past when the overall gearing needed adjustment.
An 8 speed auto tends to disguise these effects, which can be quite negative.
Going off an accepted "normal" tyre size can drastically reduce the choices available, though I haven't a lot of experience of "usual" tyre sizes in this range other than browsing Black Circles and Camskill to see what's available.
Care is needed not to use a size which cannot be easily sourced in rural areas in the event of an unrepairable tyre.

My present size is 275/40R20
I've also got a spacesaver. Looking on this forum it seems a 275/40R20 or 255/50R19 would fit in the hole. 255 obviously wouldn't stick out as much.
Need to get a full size spare. I can be hundreds of miles from services on the West coast of Scotland.

Did you read my post about moving to 19’s from 20’s?

I have just done the same thing. Use “new” Defender rims for about another 10mm offset. I have fitted 255/55-19 tyres and tbh, I can’t tell if there is any difference due to the 5% increase in tyre size.

Hello Salisburylander,
Yes, read everything I could find about 19s, including yours.
I would really have liked to drop to the P38 size 255/55R18, and I did try one on back and front.
Cleared the back caliper ok and only just touched the front caliper, so would probably have cleared the earlier smaller front discs?
But LR have changed the hub center size Rolling Eyes . P38 is 69ish and RRS is 72.6mm, so wouldn't go on the last half inch. Fek!
Pretty certain now that 255/50R19 is the way I want to go.

Update
While I was looking at the options, I noticed that the the present 20" wheels were really too wide for the 275 tyres.
They are 9.5J as specified by LR for the 275/40R20 tyre, but the rims are right out flush with the tyre face.
Probably start a war Rolling Eyes , but in my long experience and with a lot of common sense, this is not correct.
Not sure what width a 255 tyre would be on fitted to a sport, but likely too wide also. Maybe 8.5J or 9J
This made the effect of a swop undesirable.
On a P38 and L322, a 255 tyre is fitted to a 8J wheel and looks "right".
So, I acquired a set of L322 19"x 8J wheels with 255 tyres, and am well pleased with the result.

275/40R20 on a 9.5J wheel. Got to be wrong. Look at the actual tread width in relation to the rim.

I saw a set of these on a well known internet auction site but saw that they were ET57 and certainly wouldn’t fit over my Brembo calipers.

Ref: your observation about the tyre/rim width. I suspect that Land Rover wanted the RRS to look “sporty” to match it’s name. The downside of this is that the rims have absolutely no protection from the kerb. Mine weren’t too bad until I moved over to let an ambulance through. The result was a matching set of kerbed rims. I’m now happy with my new acquired Defender 8x19” rims.

2011 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 HSE Bali Blue

I sold my 20’s to a chap who wanted to put them on his ‘07 RRS. He turned up and as we were loading them into his van, its engine coughed and died. “Darn!” he said, “I should have gone to get fuel before turning up!” He was parked in front of my drive and because of other cars in the road, couldn’t move his van so I couldn’t give him a lift to the garage. He borrowed my Jerry can and was back in about 20 minutes complaining that 15 litres of diesel didn’t seem so heavy in the garage but carrying it about a quarter of a mile, it got really heavy. He went to put the fuel in but the fuel cap broke in his hand and couldn’t be used. He went to start his van but the battery slowly died before it would start. The neighbours went to the shops so we could push his van out of the way; I could then move my car and we were able to jump start his van. A bit of unnecessary hassle to say the least.
