Roof Rails

I would like to get the roof rails for the 3 times I would need during the year. Since I like the way the car looks without it, I would like to have the ability to take them off when not in use. The service guy at the dealer said they would need to stay on once installed. Installation itself did not look easy so I guess I would get wacked to get it done.

Anyone have them put on and know if they can be taken off easily? Anyone know of other options?

Thanks in advance. AC

Having just fitted them, yes the dealer is correct as once fitted they cannot be removed as it would leave holes in the plastic trim on the roof.
See my gallery for pics of the tracks. Matt

Matt,

That was very nice of you and your help is much appreciated. Since the rails are held down by screws, isn't all involved in removing them is to unscrew them? I understand that the holes in the trim piece will be permanant but they wouldn't be visible unless you're very tall.

Thanks again. AC

That is true - each rail is held down by three screws. If removed, you could block the three large 19mm holes in the trim with rubber grommets (electrical grommets are 20mm I think), so that water doesn't get trapped under the trim. Matt

The rails can be removed. It is just the side tracks that are fixed. Matt

The Sport should come with fixed side rails like estate cars and many other 4x4s do. Matt

Maybe someone will design a roof rail aka X5/XC90. With the right design could look good. Rob

No. The fire extinguisher came with a wire bracket - as they all do. I simply fixed this to the cross bar under the seat with two self tapping screws. Very simple. Matt
