This has happened twice now

Hi gents

This has happened twice now in a week. I’m sitting at lights in my RRS 2010 HSE and the car is in drive with me foot on the brake at a red light. The lights Cj she to green and I put me foot down and there is a like 2 sec delayed reaction where as nothing happened, I’m sure the engine don’t rev like it was in neutral

Any thoughts ?

Fairly new to automatics so I’m unsure

Alan

Perfectly common. Most threads on here have been about dicy launches at a roundabout. Some have said it can be mapped out and equally others put the gears to manual and stick it in first/get going/then put it into drive.

I’d say you do not have a fault, but are getting used to the car. 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

Oh ok thanks, I panicked for a moment. If others have experienced this then I guess ok, just a little edgy when you want to pull off and out your foot down and the 2 sec delay (it’s actually probably a nano second but it feels longer )

So is it just a RRS thing then or does is happen to automatics in general

It appears to be the way that Land Rover have mapped/calibrated the throttle / gearbox relationship along with setting off in 2nd gear. "They all do that, sir!" applies.

If you know you'll need to get instant response, select 1st manually, apply brake pressure with your left foot and raise the revs a little with the right foot. Then when the lights change, you get much better lift off. You can go further and apply very firm brake pressure and bring the revs up to 1700 or thereabouts. When you come of the brakes, it will surge away from standstill.

Bear in mind that doing this heats up the gearbox oil very quickly and will increase wear internally, too, so it's not something to do on anything other than a rare basis. If you hold revs and brakes for more than a certain time period, the ECU will ignore the throttle and the revs will drop to idle again.

The gearbox mapping is the one aspect of the RRS that bugs me on a regular basis. Slowing down to a roundabout, I find I have to use manual downshifts if I want to roll through - if I leave it in D, it will often be in 4th at 10mph! 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I don’t think the suicide pause happens when the car is in sport mode.

How does my 2011 not do this? Are you driving with both feet? At a complete stop, I go brake to accelerator and the car rockets off. The transmission definitely goes into first when I come to a complete stop. Only at roundabouts where I quickly slow down then try to accelerate does it seem to bog down in the wrong gear, but no delay on the accelerator. Maybe it’s a RHD thing?

I did an update on the TCM and ECM a week after I got the car, maybe that’s it? 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

Our old Audi A6 did this and it had a CVT box. Once going though it was fine. I don’t think it’s an exclusive RRS issue though. 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

Sports mode or a remap cures this, it seems to be more drastic on the RRS than other autos I own. 2018 Telsa MS

If yours goes in to first gear every time you stop then it's definitely not a standard set up. They are set up to start in second gear when in drive and no special programmes selected. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I get this lag when pulling away at roundabouts and busy junctions so it has been a habit to slide it into sport mode just before the junction as I believe that it tends to select 1st gear rather than the programmed 2nd for starting. Once moving you can slide it back into drive. Robin

Turning out of our Close on a blind bend with this ever present "lag" causes me some concern on most occasions, from now on I'll select sport mode to set off Thumbs Up

So everyone’s car with a six speed transmission only shifts four times?

Mine has gotten a fresh CCF download and updated TCM and ECM using JLR-SDD, I can’t imagine too many tunes surviving that.

I paid extra attention to mine today on the way home and there were definitely 5 shifts from stop to 60mph. There is no discernible lag, I press the pedal and it goes. The only exception has been when I’ve had to brake hard coming to a roundabout and it feels as if the transmission can’t keep up with the gear changes before I start turning, then it doesn’t want to shift since it recognizes it’s turning (it’s supposed to prevent shifting during turns, so this makes sense). I’ve learned to just brake a little earlier to give the transmission an extra second or two to get down the gears before I turn. No issues with that since. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory
