Restricted performance - Turbo Valve Stuck

Hi guys,

2013 L494 RRS 3L Diesel (newer model) with 100k on the clock

I've been suffering with this "restricted performance" issue for around 3 months now. Drives perfect for around 25 minutes / 20 miles, then goes into this mode and restricts the turbo. Turning off for 30 seconds and starting up again temporarily clears the issue. A nightmare for motorway driving, which I do a lot of.

A vacuum/smoke test proved a cracked manifold needed replacing, which got done, but still continued with the same issue.

My indie land rover mechanic suggested that a vacuum solenoid valve might need to be replaced, which got done, but still no improvement.

I believe diagnostics are throwing up some kind of messages about a stuck valve on the turbo.

Before I start making enquiries to have the turbo replaced, does anyone else have any suggestions please?

Many thanks
Alex

If it is the dump valve being stuck your indie should be able to either access and apply a vacuum to test and or remove and clean?

Most S/H turbos come with the dump valve included anyway. You should also be able to remove the boost pipe from the compressor end to check the condition of the impeller which I am guessing was done when the manifold was replaced?

the other option would be to log live data from driving whilst using a diagnostic tool to monitor the dump valve. Not sure if Gap IID can do this but others certainly can.

Without confirmation you are into just keep changing parts in hope that resolves it.

My indie did a vacuum test and reported that the test was successful. Not sure about them checking the condition of the impeller, I'll ask.
It's back in again next week, so I'll pass on your comments, especially about logging live data while driving.
Many thanks for the suggestions.

Do you know what codes the car is giving? That may help more.
When I had issues the codes was P0234-77 Turbo/supercharger overboost mechanical failure - commanded position not reachable. This turned out to be a sticking throttle body butterfly valve.

Hope this helps

Phil

I'm not 100% sure, but I'll ask my indie for a print out this week.
Cheers.
