What to buy, advise please.

Been reading far to much, i now don't know which way to go as fed up of pro and cons etc and digging around forums and FB groups.
2007 tdv8
2009 tdv6
Or sorry to say Shogun mk4

Would love 4.2sc but wallet not big enough.

Thats the choice where do I go. Is the later tdv6 the same legendary v6 that kills its self?

Help i don't have long.

Is the 2009 car a pre-facelift or a very early facelift variant? as the preface-lift will be a 2.7 the facelift one will be 3.0. The whole range of engines had their own issues one way or another, personally I would go for the TDV8 every day of the week. As far as the rest of the vehicle is concerned they are all likely to suffer the same issues with suspension, electrics etc. so in that respect would not consider one any better than the other. A lot would depend on the overall condition of the vehicle and how well it has been maintained etc. as well.

I've not had a 3.8, but from reading on here the turbos and EGR valves are the problems, so you're half way there.
Again ACE bars and pipes fail, both front and rear, so good start.
As has been suggested, wishbones, suspension compressor and usual wear and tear items will all empty your wallet. I would like to see a big fat file of receipts to indicate it's been looked after myself.
I has the 2.7 D3 (OK heavier) before my current 3.0 RRS and the extra 55bhp are noticeable, I would imagine that the V8 drives more like the 3.0 than 2.7

Get the TDV8. Lovely engine with a nice V8 rumble. If it's had new turbos fitted then that's great. Best thing to keep them happy is to let it idle for a minute before you turn it off - that lets the turbos cool and spin down a bit and helps their lifespan.

Any RRS with the dynamic response anti roll bars can have them leak - it's not dependent on the engine fitted.

The EGR on the TDV8 seem to last longer than the TDV6 ones so I wouldn't consider them to be a worrying factor. The ones in my old one were changed at 150k miles but only because something else was being changed that required them to be moved so putting new back in made sense.

The performance of the TDV8 is night and day better than the 2.7TDV6 and better than the 3.0TDV6/SDV6 fitted in the L320. The L494 got the 300bhp version of the V6 diesel but the L320 got the 250bhp version. The TDV8 is c.270bhp and whilst 20bhp doesn't sound much, the V8 just gives more grunt across the whole rev range and just pulls better whatever the revs. On the motorway, a flex of the right foot is all that's needed to add speed to pass thing. The SDV6, for example, needs more right foot and then changes down a cog before going, by which time the TDV8 has done what you wanted and is up the road.

If you drive in places with lots of traffic lights, the SC is the one to go for. Whistle Thumbs Up

Otherwise the TDV8 is just as quick in real life driving and gives about 10mpg better returns too.

If you're going to go petrol, save up a few more quid and get the 5.0SC. Now that's a silly-quick 2.5tonne missile! Shocked Cool 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Gotta be honest .. I regret not going for the 5.0SC V8.

I'd definitely take the TDV8 over the V6, but the 5.0SC over the TDV8.. 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

I'll be generous and say my 5.0L averages around 15mpg. in 9 years and 76K all the engine has had apart from oil and filters is accessory belt, supercharger belt and a set of spark plugs at it's 7 year service.

My 5.0 SC averages 16.5-17 MPG with mainly shorter trips. Not bad given, the weight, aerodynamics of an upright piano and performance. There is no replacement for displacement - W O Bentley
