United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Rimini Red
Automatic Headlights

I guess many RRS owners with an "Auto" setting on the headlights simply leave the lights permanently on that setting and then forget about the lights altogether.

My problem is that the automatic lights don't appear to be able to accurately judge when they should switch themselves on and when they are not needed. Today in thick fog the lights stayed off. Whilst on other days in bright sunshine the lights have come on.

Now the "07 model has a remarkably bright lamp on the dashboard to tell you when the headlights are on, it is much easier to spot when the headlights are on unnecessarily or off when, if you were setting them maually, you would have put them on. Has anyone else noticed a problem with this, and does anyone know where the external sensor is positioned so the vehicle can assess what external light levels are ? RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini

Your "spots" are actually fog lamps and, as such, it's illegal to drive with them on (in the UK, at least) unless visibility is poor...

At least the RRS switching is arranged so that dipped beams have to be on as well, avoiding complete boy racer syndrome Whistle http://www.black-code.co.uk

i stand corrected, Fog lights then, and yes i am probably one of them, the lights do in fact light up just in front of the vehicle, which is of great benefit to me living out in the sticks and down small lanes full of pot holes and small animals, the more light the better i say Twisted Evil

No S i do not ever sit idly in the middle lane of the motorway, like some senile old tos Censored Ser who cant see the end of his bonnet, i drive properly, i sit in the fast lane as fast as i can go with my fog lights on hoping every one will move out of the way Twisted Evil some of my Previous cars

I recall that in slow traffic under a railway bridge they even used to sense on and off well and that was like a car and a half long ish... Thumbs Up

AND you could tell from in the car which you cannot in the RRS... Sad

I think the light sensor is in the top middle of the windscreen with the rain sensor. Cheers

I've been a fan of auto on lights but the RRS system is not sensitive enough and as noted above I find that the headlights switch on too late and off too early. I'm not sure but I think the sensor is on the rear-view mirror front. I have resorted to manually switching them on and off as I prefer to drive on the motorway with dipped headlights on at all times - bitter experience of idiots pulling out just a few meters in front of me makes me think Giverny Green is not that easily seen even in broad daylight. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
