SDV6 vs Ingenium Straight 6

What do you fella’s think who have driven both? I have a 2017 SDV6 and was given a 2021 as a loan car whilst mine was in for service.
For me the power delivery on mine at low rpm is far superior than the later engine. It pulls better, sounds better, and feels more urgent and suited to the RRS than the new one is.

Interested to hear your opinions , chaps. 🙂

Which version of Ingenium did they lend you? There is a 250bhp, a 300bhp and a 350bhp version of that engine. A 250bhp one would feel flat after your 300bhp SDV6, for example. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Sorry, should have said it was the D300 in an RRS.
Max torque is 50Nm less at about the same RPM and you can definitely feel the difference. The SDV6 curve although dropping off quicker is still at the same level as the I6 when at 3krpm although the I6 curve is flatter throughout its max torque period. I have to say, I really like the SDV6 (apart from its crank problems) and I think it has much more character than the I6. Guess I should try a D350.

Just had a look and found a comparison graph of the SDV6 and the D300 I6 MHEV. I must say I thought the mild hybrid bit might have given a boost but the I6 is definitely weaker across the board:

The D350 is the same as the D300 low down and then starts to gain as the revs climb. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

That’s a good graph and nice to see them overlayed against each other and it’s also very interesting to see the D300 curve is pretty much exactly the same as the D350.
Obviously it’s been mapped to be like this, but is it just the map or is it mechanically different?

I'm going to guess and say it's mapped that way to limit torque in to the gearbox / transfer box. There may be physical differences e.g. injectors, but I'm willing to go with the suggestion that the D250, D300 and D350 are mechanically the same but just have different mapping.

It would be nice to find out, because in the second hand market, a D250 that can be simply and safely mapped to D350 levels is going to be an good buy for someone that doesn't want to pay D350 premiums. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I had a MY16 SDV6 and now a MY22 D350 HST

I can't speak for the D300. I did a test drive with it, but had only 50km on the odo, so that I didn't push it.

@Turdmon
in this graph there is a small failure
the torque of the D350 is 700Nm from 1500 - 3000rpm
the torque of the D300 is 650Nm from 1500 - 2500rpm
the torque of the D250 is 600Nm from 1250 - 2250rpm

the plateau of the D350 is very broad. So, it's definitely not exactly the same curve.

compared my D350 to my old SDV6:
the new Ingenium is quicker, stronger, quieter and more economical. at 120km/h on the Autobahn the D350 is taking between 6.5 and 7.5l/100km (!)

I really love the new Ingenium, because it's a peach of an engine. In idle you literally don't hear it
Perhaps the difference of the sound between the D300 and the SDV6 is giving the feeling, that the SDV6 pushes stronger. To be honest: the "bassy" SDV6 sound is uncomparable - for a Diesel a really fine sound.
The Ingenium sounds like a Petrol engine and is much quieter (IMHO).
Compared the graphs etc. and taking in consideration that the D300 is slightly heavier than the SDV6 (because of MHEV) I think that the both are pretty same regarding acceleration etc.

regarding mechanical parts:
I don't know how/what LR has done, but I know that BMW with their inline six has different pistons, injectors etc. for each level of power Range Rover Sport HST D350

The "bassy" SDV6 is a weak and weedy sound compared to the TDV8, but that's a different beast altogether. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I agree - I had an SDV6 for 4 years and don’t really think it sounded “bassy”. The Porsche V6 diesels and BMW straight six diesels sound much better I reckon. Great engine though - apart from the obvious “Achilles’ heel”. 2013 L494 V8 s/c Autobiography Dynamic
