2012 5.0s/c timing chain issues?

Hi All,

So, I”ve just freaked myself out with notions of failing timing chain tensioners and my v8 exploding. Thud

I’ve done some internet searches and, to me, it’s not conclusive. I’ve seen something about a class action in the US but, not the outcome. I’ve seen another thing saying it’s all about oil viscosity. Is this an actual issue I should consider taking action on to avoid? Has anyone else had the problem and fixed it? I think I’m just getting freaked out now my baby is over 10 years old and out of warranty. Seems like it’s repeatedly ready to cost me a grand to fix at any given moment and that’s without the tensioner actually failing.

What’s the collective wisdom on this? What do you think should be the course of action? Cheers,

Stuart.

Nothing to do with oil viscosity provided you use 5w20 oil, it was a problem with the chain tensioners wearing, they did start fitting revised tensioner on later engines, if your car is a MY12 on, it should have the revised one's fitted if it is after Vin.no CA759577 you should be o.k. Personally I would just ignore all the scare mongering merchants, and all the crap spouted online by the ''armchair experts'' if you believe all that rubbish every 3.0L built is going to self destruct as well, but that said anything mechanical can fail.

Cheers

I used to have the same model, mine had just over 70000 miles on the clock, no rattles but my independent Land Rover garage said they had seen quite a few with chain rattles once they got over 70000 miles. Maybe get someone who knows to have a listen.

It is not unknown for the supercharger torsional isolator to wear and or the isolator spring to break which would also sound like a knock or rattle from the front of the engine, however that is easy enough to check, just drop the s/c belt off, run the engine and if noise goes that's the problem.

Cheers
