Hi RRS's.
I have a 2010 /2011 Range Rover Sport 3L TDV6 which requires a new battery.
I have searched online for a video on how to replace but can only find a full fat Range Rover video
or a 2013 Sport video. I have also searched on here but cannot find what is involved.
It appears the battery sits slightly behind the scuttle panel and so i am thinking this may require
the windscreen wipers / scuttle to be removed possibly? I have been advised that the job at a main dealer can take
around 45 minutes and will cost about £75. I am not overly unhappy with this if it is a tricky job but could anyone please advise
if this is a relatively straight forward job for someone with only a very basic knowledge of car maintenance please?
Or would it be prudent, due to possible electronic problems to let the dealership install? Thank you for your time and advice

No you do not need to remove the wipers etc, its quite straight forward, although the battery is quite heavy and drops in at a bit of angle first, drop the suspension first makes it a little easier depending on how tall you are.

Really appreciate you thoughts. Can i really assume then that apart from a bit of a wriggle
to get the old one out and new in that it is a relatively straightforward out and in?
Would i need to re set anything , clock, radio code etc would you know please?

Yeah, thats about it, the only things you will need to reset is the date on dash as will default to 2009 and the clock, will also need to reset window one touch operation, same with sunroof if you have one, thats about it, certainly don't need to pay anyone £75.00 to do it, that's half the price of a new battery.

Changed mine 18 months ago in about 10 minutes. Very easy. Follow the top tip and drop the suspension. I also made sure the key was not in the vehicle and left a door open in case the electrics did play up and locked the vehicle.

Second tip - get a friend to help as the battery is heavy as you slant it into place. There is no replacement for displacement - W O Bentley

45 minutes and £75 to change the battery? Wow, talk about bending people over!

One thing I found when changing the battery on my old TDV8 was that the Yuasa one I bought had a slightly larger lip around the bottom which fouled the battery tray slightly. A little bit of fettling of the tray and it slotted in snugly. But I would expect a standard battery to be a straight replacement with nothing more required than undoing and redoing the connections.

As mentioned already by others, the battery is heavy and dropping the suspension will help. Angle the rear of the battery down and feed it in under the windscreen panel. Be careful and make sure the battery doesn't thud in to the rear of the battery location - the engine ECU and transfer box ECU live just behind the battery and you don't want to smack 20g of battery in to their housing. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

From the attached photo it appears that the positive / negative cables are very tight to the body of the battery.
Can i assume that once they are undone there is enough slack to pull them clear whilst dropping in the new one?

And a final question please. Is it Red off first then black or the other way around?

Changed mine last week I found a guide on here & followed it to the letter , took about 15 minutes the only difficulty is the weight as already stated.

May be a daft question but what is the logic behind removing the terminals in that order?

The body, engine etc. are all "grounded" to the negative terminal. If you undo the positive first and, for example, allow your spanner to touch metal whilst undoing the positive terminal you create a circuit. By undoing the negative first, if your spanner touches anything on the body etc., it doesn't matter. When you then undo the positive, it doesn't matter because the negative is no longer connected to the body/engine so no circuit occurs.

Likewise when reconnecting, the positive is connected first for the same reason.

That's my understanding of it, anyway.

Oh, and it's worth remembering that some older cars (e.g. some classics from back in the 50s and 60s) are positive earth - the bodywork is grounded to the positive terminal. On these, you do the process in reverse by taking off the positive first. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
