2.7 TDV6 crankshaft front seal replacement

Hi,
I am wanting to have a go at replacing above myself. I realise it’s a bit of a daunting task but after paying £400 to have it replaced already and now leaking again after approx 1500 miles I am reluctant to do it again! I would much sooner spend the money on a new oil pump and seal and any special tool I might need and have a go myself. Can anybody recommend any literature (online or book) that I can use as a guide?

Regards,

Gary.

Either:

Buy an hours subscribe to Topix and download the relevant parts

Or:

There is a guide on belt replacement, and another on oil pump replacement on the D3 forum

Thumbs Up

Malaysia

Getting that oil seal in squarely is absolutely essential, and a pig of a job to accomplish. I got a machinist machine a nylon sleeve as an installation tool. Cheap and no fuss whatsoever. Make sure that the seal is installed at the correct height.

I did not use an original LR seal, but a Japanese replacement by NOK and it worked out fine many miles down the road.

Ok, after more investigation and cleaning up and going for a drive with engine trays removed, i have found the following:

Front crankshaft oil seal - seems dry but the hole in the oil pump directly behind the pulley looks to be 'wet'. What is this hole for?

When looking from underneath car, i can see a drop of oil on the bottom of turbo. When i remove the small heat shield in inner wing, the jubilee clip is tight and free of oil. From looking at diagrams online, i can see that there is another pipe going to the unit that i cannot see from underneath or from inner wing, Is this likely to leak and how easy to replace?

There is fluid on the joint between the engine and transfer case. Could this be rear crank seal or more likely a seal in transfer box? how difficult or how much to fix?

Many thanks in advance,

Gary.

If the hole in the belt cover is wet, then something behind the belt cover must be leaking

Crank seal, cam seal/s, head gasket, oil pump...

Belt over off, clean up and run engine. Not for too long, as the water pump won't be circulating

Any thoughts on transfer box & turbo leaks?

It’s normal for there to be a big of oil around turbo.

Yes but it seems to have worked it’s way down and gathered a bit. What’s the fix, new hose/s or turbo itself?
Also, is transfer box a big job?

Tighten jubilee clips a little.

Otherwise you need to cheat it off and see where it’s coming from
