RRS TDV8 owner after help

I'm hoping that someone can help me with issues my wife's RRS TDV8 is having.

Driving normally she lost all power, car struggles to start and when it does it struggles to maintain idle, lots of smoke (i suspect that its un-burnt diesel), won't rev above 1000rpm, no power and will stall after a couple of seconds.

There are no horrible mechanic noises, no oil or other fluid leaking....

The only other thing I noticed is that it shows "Sport D" when in Park, cycle the shift lever and it goes back to P.

Ideas?

Electrical?

Fuel Pump?

I suspect the turbos aren't an issue

I would check that petrol has not been fuelled instead of diesel, my wife did that and swore blind she didn't, your symptoms sound similar Shocked

Is their not an anti fuelling device built into the filler, prevents you from filling with petrol,, tried it once with mine and it closed off the filler immediately, I got about 16p worth of petrol in it.

I also had similar issues as you have,, not quite as severe but it certainly was undrivable,, turned out to be one of the egr valves. If both of yours have failed who knows how bad it could be..
You don't say what mileage you have? 2010 RRS, TDV8
bali Blue / colour coded
side steps / flappy paddles
black perforated leather
22" overfinch
heated everything, TV,fridge ...... now with gold calipers and mud flaps !( black mud flaps that is) !!
Many years ago,,,,, 1955 series 1 landie , sometimes wish I had kept it

I'm sure the turbo has gone...the inlet hose is full of oil.

Now can you change the turbo without removing the body...I'm sure I saw a post somewhere that did it without removing the body, might be harder but I don't have access to a 2 post lift!!

Anyone recall the post?

It can be done but is "a Censored " apparently. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Commiserations. My SDV6 did both turbos a year ago. I remember the thread referred to but in my case/maybe for SDV6's the view was body off. So had a service and both the belts done same time. Also, while it might be possible to save a few quid using rebuilt or exchange turbos wouldn't recommend it, better to bite the bullet and fit new.

You get some idea of how much of a beast of a vehichle it really is when you can see it sitting with its body off !

done some more work today, stripped the passenger wheel and took the lower inter-cooler pipe off...See the video:

I've stripped the upper wishbone etc and I think I may have enough access to do without removing the body...time will tell.

Ok, today I managed to get the passenger side turbo off the car without removing the body...

Not what I'd call a simple task but if you are good diy mechanic it's fairly straight forward with a standard set of tools and some axle stands, and I did it on the drive, not even in a garage.

Diagnosis confirmed, turbo seized solid,bit of compressor blades missing, nothing got into exhaust side.

Now to install the new one, weather permitting that will be tomorrow.

Today's work cut short by weather, but good news is that the new turbo is now back in!! It's always quicker putting stuff back together.

Pipe work and exhaust left to do so no starting....hopefully next weekend will be good weather.

So I've found out what happened to the old turbo.

It appears that the shaft connecting the exhaust and inlet side together has snapped, resulting in both the compressor and turbine wheels becoming jammed in their bodies. The compressor wheel has by far the greatest damage as the shaft broke right by it so it was able to move around much more, and hence all of the oil in this side. The turbine on the exhaust side had some minor scuffs but no oil had leaked into the exhaust.

Ok, I've been a little worried about what caused this to fail in the first place so I've done some digging and I think I may have found a possible cause.

Firstly, in my opinion if you wanted to design a point of failure then this one does so...I'll explain my reasoning.

The shaft broke right at the point that the shaft narrows....

This also appears to be past where the oil fed bearings support the shaft, so any imbalance in the compressor wheel is bound to cause a failure...

The bearings themselves and the shaft shows no sign of heat (lack of oil) or scoring (dirty oil), they fit the shaft perfectly with no play whatsoever.

Finally the bolt that holds the compressor onto the shaft was not tight and had undone slightly...could this have caused imbalance that resulted in the failure?



Is this my smoking gun?
