MY10 RRS New Battery advice

Morning All,

This has probably been covered, but just for completeness I thought id ask the question.

Ive had a few faults popping up on dash recently, and the car maybe a little laboured to start up..not too bad, but this morning (quite cold) the car wont start. Charged it for 20 mins, and it fired up.

Ive heard that a drop in voltage can throw up a few warnings on the dash (susp, hdc, traction, etc) so is it worth swapping old battery out for a new one?

If so, what should I be looking for? Amps? Cranking? Confused Confused Confused

Any advice folks?

Thanks in advance

Gar

Go for the best you can fit in the tray. I’ve fitted one rated for the Diesals. Yuasa YBX5020 110Ah, 900A. The original was a 90Ah, 850A Land Rover Varta which equates to the Yuasa YBX5019. The bigger battery was 1 inch longer so was a tight fit but it went in.

I also updated the CCF with the new details as I believe the car charges the battery in a pattern matched to the battery capacity. 2012 5.0 SC AB

The car configuration file. It lists all the options on the car that need activation to work amongst other things. I believe the car needs to know what battery is fitted so it can charge it in the appropriate manner. 2012 5.0 SC AB

Could never work out which to set mine to when upgraded the battery as the particular/size rating was not mentioned in the CCF so left it as was and have had no issues, there is some setting I remember which should be reset so the car knows it has had new battery which relates to the battery monitoring system on the facelift variant if I remember correctly. Although told car works it out for it's self over time don't know if that is correct though, was told that by a Indi.

Cheers

Is this the setting to tell the car if it's a traditional lead acid battery , compared to an AGM one?
If you are replacing like for like,AFAIK you don't need to do anything (e.g let the car to to sleep, disconnect the -ve first etc)

Extract from Workshop Manual, no mention of Lead Acid or AGM.

8 BATTERY REPLACEMENT
If it is determined that a battery requires replacement, always refer to the appropriate section of the workshop
manual for instructions on removing and installing the battery from the vehicle.
On in service vehicles fitted with a Battery Monitoring System (BMS), the BMS module must be reset following the
installation of a new battery. The BMS module reset procedure must be performed using an approved diagnostic
system.

.but you don't actually need to do that, as the BMS will "learn" the characteristics of the new battery over time. Or at least it does on Jags. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

Resetting the BMS is only required if you are not fitting like with like i.e. AGM with new AGM no reset required.

That’s the Halfords number for the HBX5019, mine is the HSB020 silver, I only got it from Halfords as it was under a £100 with my trade card. 2012 5.0 SC AB

Thanks for the comments and contributions folks.

Still none the wiser whether I can slot in a replacement battery or not without having to reset anything (BMS).

Also, before I forget, if I swop out the battery, will I need any codes to ensure car systems work? Ie radio code?

anybody swop out a battery and not need any codes inputting?

cheers

Gar

You will not need any codes when swapping battery, if I remember correctly all you will have to do is reset the date as it defaults to 2009 and reset the electric windows "one touch operation" easy enough, also the sunroof if you have one. As far as the BMS is concerned reset it if you have a diag. tool, if not apparently they do periodically do a self calibration test so not a real issue, I think I would just make sure the new battery is fully charged before fitting it. I replaced my Lead Acid with a AGM and never changed any setting on the car to say it had been changed to AGM that was three years ago and have never had any battery issues at all.

Cheers
