2019 RRS... First impressions

Hi!

Took delivery of my MY19 RRS 5.0SCAB and thought I would share some initial thoughts:

1. Comfort and ride - compared with my Audi SQ7 is on another level. Just a joy to drive and I can’t wait to get in it. The Audi, whilst having the premium Valcona leather seats, was in comparison hard, unforgiving and overall an average ride experience with seats that aren’t that comfy. RRS is just sublime and glides along like Torvil and Dean on ice...

2. Looks - I’ll take the RRS walking down the catwalk over rivals any day. It’s presence on the road is streets ahead of a Q7 or X5 or XC90. Don’t even get me started on that Watson tosser, pouring all over the new X5 that’s so ugly it’s unbelievable. He judges cars based on whether he can fit a plastic bottle in the door bins, FFS...

3. Tech - I’ll break it down in separate points...

3.1 UX/UI - stunning display and graphics, far superior to BMW/Audi/Merc in my opinion. Response is fine, but perhaps the more you navigate around it the slower it gets. Overall, works fine if you don’t go on endless feature hunting sprees.

3.2 Useability - it’s ok, some quirkyness is apparent. Separate settings located on steering wheel menu button, lower screen and upper. Little consistency between them. Feels like three separate systems really but there are quite a few options which is nice. Some missing though like how to start up. You can choose the lower screen on start up but not on the upper. And you can’t change/scroll through the digital dash screen options with one button like you can with an audi. A software upgrade would be handy to add these functions perhaps.

3.3 Reliability - so far pretty good. Just the lower screen being a bit temperamental. Which I think is connected to the ambient lighting forgetting its setting on occasions.

3.4 Apple CarPlay - excellent addition to the functions and works flawlessly. Far better than the audi that didn’t display album artwork and often struggled to work after restarting.

4. 5.0SC Engine - unbelievably enjoyable to drive. The right amount of power and growl on normal setting and sufficiently aggressive stance when in Dynamic. A drivers car in every sense.

5. Various features like gesture tailgate, pixel laser lights, etc. - all working faultlessly

6. Wife’s verdict - she loves it Thumbs Up

So, all in all, a fantastic car and definitely worth the effort I’m waiting 7 months for!!! MY19 5.0SC Dynamic AB - Boss Grey, Black Pano Roof, 22” Gloss Black Alloys, Ebony/Ivory Massage Seats, Carbon Fibre Finishers, HUD, DTV and the all important Cabin Ionisation...

Hey mate,

Care to share a bit more about the SCV8 engine and exhaust and handling?

We get a lot of SVR reviews around here but not many on the normal SCV8 Autobiography cars.

Was in the market for one but I think I'm going to go back to the Velar as on balance I just prefer it slightly more to the RRS, only downside is I'll have to stick to the SDV6 engine but oh well Smile

Sure. I test drove an SVR and the sound was crazy. I found the handling and ride were set up too hard for everyday use poodling around west London and I didn’t warm to the bucket seats. After driving a 3.0D AB I preferred the seats, so I opted for the 5.0SC.

I didn’t actually test drive a 5.0SC so I slightly crossed my fingers when I placed the order. I needn’t have worried as it’s a superb engine. I did own a 5.0SC XKR a few years ago so had some history with this beast. It’s a Ford engine made in Mexico apparently.

Anyway, the car handles beautifully, gliding along the roads effortlessly. On start up, It growls to begin with then settles down after a 50 seconds or so. Compared to the D you always hear the engine on acceleration no matter what speed you’re going which I really like. At low speeds it’s like a soft growl that a dog makes when it’s eating and you get too near its food.

Ride wise it corners like it’s on rails and the seats are just Emirates First Class comfort. I love the massage seats which you couldn’t get with the SVR I think.

In Dynamic mode, you hear the engine basically get angry and start shouting at everyone. Fantastic noise that pleasures the ears like having Kelly Brook clad in red lingerie, tied star shaped to your bed shouting “take me big boy” at the top of her lungs!!!

That helpful? MY19 5.0SC Dynamic AB - Boss Grey, Black Pano Roof, 22” Gloss Black Alloys, Ebony/Ivory Massage Seats, Carbon Fibre Finishers, HUD, DTV and the all important Cabin Ionisation...

I really am tempted by the SCV8 car but its just not the right choice for me I think.

I'm going back down a model size to the Velar with one on air, probably D300/SDV6.

Does sound like a cracking car though and you got it in the colour I was going to have mine in and had my SDV8 in.

Good luck, I agree, the engine is sublime, the rest was not so good on my car.

Why couldn’t JLR put a decent steering wheel on the SC? BMW has JLR beaten hands down for tactility of controls and the brilliant M steering wheel.
