Fuming! Advice needed!!

So, pick our 2016 RRS Autobiography up a couple of weeks ago, a week ago I was flicking through the menu and took a picture of when the next service is due (21/11/18 @ 23728 miles, oil service due in 4750 miles)
Just been to have another look (29/11/18 @ 23913 miles, oil service due in 3100 miles!)

Then looked at the oil level - Engine oil overfilled!!!! Please refer to handbook

Handbook states - If the message Engine oil level overfilled is displayed, seek qualified assistance immediately. Do not drive the vehicle, as this will causes serious damage to the engine!

Just continuing to read through the handbook and it also states - The engine oil has to be hot, and the engine has to have been switched off for 10 minutes. At present the oil will be cold, car was last used at about 5ish.

Shall I take it out and warm the oil then try again, or will it not make any difference to the levels?

Should a warning have come up on the dash to warn me if it was overfilled?

I'm guessing that you have the V6 diesel. Do a search for DPF and oil dilution. It could mean that there is diesel in your oil from re-generation cycles. As your distance to service is reducing disproportionately to the distance you have driven, it may be getting worse.

You can check the oil level without running your car and then having to wait 10 minutes or so.

- Pull bonnet release
- Press start without foot on brake
- Keep pressing “OK” until all warnings get cleared
- Do oil check as normal

Just been out for a quick drive to get the oil hot, left it 10 mins after getting home, and the oil level is ‘OK’ It’s on the max, but ok, which is a massive relief, but still have the problem of the distance until the next oil service dropping 1650 miles in 185 miles traveled!

Phone the dealer in the morning I think!

I had exactly the same
*Non linear collapse in miles to oil service from 3500 to 0 in just under 1000 miles of actual travel.
*interim oil service carried out as part of 5yr service pack (check if you have it) , but the issue was confirmed as oil dilution (dilution>6.1% causes the warning)
*About 2 weeks after service I checked the oil (electronically) and it was overfilled, went for a harsh 20 minute drive and oil level normalised - but that was enough for me
*Decided to exit the brand and sell car, given concerns of JLR's attitude to covering major damage under warranty, though some members are carrying out their own interim oil changes in an endeavour to protect the engine from oil dilution which impacts as I recall certain MY14 to MY16 (possibly later MY's too.) SDV6 cars

I do wonder if even a 3 monthly oil change is enough, if the DPF is clogged, even with new oil, then oil dilution will be occuring, and dilution above 2% seems to be sufficient to create problems, never mind JLR's trigger level of 6.1%

Thanks for the info and advice. I did read up on most of the posts on here, re oil dilution and crankshaft issues, and because of that, got the dealer to confirm in writing, that any future crankshaft issue would be covered under the extended warranty. But I’m still worried I’m going to have future problems

What’s the difference with the MY17 engine? Or does that suffer the same issues too?

Yep! Half tempted to throw it back at them tbh, and buy a MY17 diesel model, or do they suffer from the same problem too?

If you bought used from main dealer they have two years warranty i thought.

They do, and I still have 6 months left on the 3 year manufacturers warranty, but I fear it’s a case of when not if, the engine is going to break! And even if it is covered, do I want a RRS that has had a new engine fitted?

Just raise your concerns with the dealer and ask them to check it over. It wouldn’t worry me owning a 2016 car with 23k on the clock give it another 3 or 4 years and 70k and out of warranty I would worry about repair costs.

Get it checked to put your mind at rest and then enjoy the car 👍

re GJW1's comment, he is very right to point out the fear of owning RRS L494 diesel which is outside warranty with 50k+ miles on clock.

But having spent a good amount of Her Majesty's on the car you will want some peace of mind that say in 3 years time and 30k miles when you want to sell it that it will actually be worth something...

Surveys like https://www.whatcar.com/news/25-most-unreliable-new-cars/n17550 will not help future second hand values.. switching risk to better preserve capital made sense to me..

..and in that survey number 1 is RRS L494. "Worryingly, 60% of diesel Range Rover Sports had problems. They spanned a wide range of areas, the most serious of which were the gearbox, drivetrain, engine and suspension. Not all cars were fixed under warranty and some were off the road for more than a week." P400e HSE Portofino Blue and Ivory Seats.. it's like a yacht!!
