I managed to undo mine with a pair of sliding water pump pliers once, but you really need a special spanner, which is available from the likes of Sealey tools for about a tenner or so. Viscous fan spanners are a generic size but very slim so that it fits.

You will need to hold the body of the viscous clutch and undo the big hexagon using your new special spanner. Remember that it is left hand thread!! The threads may be loctited so might not spin off freely. Refitting is just a reverse of the process.

Changing the alternator is not difficult once the fan is out of the way. Takes about an hour.

Be careful not to do anything silly like sticking the spanner through the radiator core. Very Happy Thumbs Up
