Extended Warranty Handbook - Crankshaft

When questioning a main LR dealer on whether the crankshaft issue is covered by the extended warranty, I have been assured that it is, and to refer to the warranty handbook. I can see where it’s covered for both the extended warranty and the select extended warranty (see pics below)

But I can’t find anywhere that would suggest it isn’t, so I don’t see how they can get out of covering this issue!?

Has anyone on here experienced this crankshaft failure whilst being covered under the extended warranty, and been told your not covered? What was there reason for not covering you?

John

But it doesn't cover "known issues" or "design flaws" which they both relate to crank failure, as JLR released a TSB about it...

Thanks for the reply mate, does it say that in the hand book anywhere?

Sorry if it sounds like a stupid question, but what is a TSB?

Just about to purchase a 16 plate autobiography, and the dealer keeps telling me it is definitely covered, they are even willing to put it in writing, just want as much info as possible

When mine went I had the extended warranty, and it was only the horror stories on here that made me a bit paranoid, some were saying it’s definitely NOT covered and it was only a good will payment LR gave out to some. What didn’t help was that it only mentioned that the crank is covered in the SELECT extended warranty with no mention in the extended ? 2015 HSE SDV6 Scotia Grey, ebony / lunar, colour coded, deployable steps, TV, sliding pano and a few other bits. The proof is here in clause 11:

11. Design Faults and Recalls Any damage to parts, which are being recalled by
the vehicle’s manufacturer or which have inherent design faults are not
covered by this Warranty

The manufacturer hasn't recalled the crankshaft though. And whether it's an inherent design fault is open to interpretation - LR say there's nothing wrong with it.

The fact that the literature specifically states the crankshaft is covered but then has a "weasel words" clause later might not go well with the Insurance Ombudsman. They don't like the industry doing such things. Would definitely be worth taking it to them in the case of the LR warranty declining a crankshaft claim. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Does anyone have any stats for crankshaft failure - ie. what % of vehicles have suffered?

I only ask as, from personal experience, the horror stories one reads on car forums can put you off buying almost any car.

Certainly not doubting there is a major issue here but would love to know the odds!

Thanks

Did they cover yours? Or was it a LR good will payment?

Would be interesting to know - like you say you could be put off buying anything from reading the internet. You could be put off even leaving the house!

There's circa 25k RRS SDV6's on the UK roads at the moment. MY16 RRS 3.0 SDV6 HSE Dynamic

I think the horror stories are always overlooked or pull at out worrying side, I think the car crank cant be a total worry or the used prices on these would reflect the huge issue.

Think about what happened to the used prices of the RX8 where they needed a unknown rebuild at a certain mileage.

That said I do have a warranty extended on mine.

But they HAVE recalled them in S Korea. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

There are so many RRS around I do wonder how many as a percentage this actually has affected. I see so many I literally passed 3 on my lunch break today./ Although makes my car seem a lot less special Sad

I'll say it again

It's not the issue that they are having bottom end issues. It's the ridiculous cost of replacement, as well as the stress/hassle for the owner of who is going to foot the £15k+ (£25k+ from a dealer) bill on a car that is 6 months out of manufacturers warranty...
