Red battery light

Two days ago I put the RRSS battery on a trickle charge for about 4 hrs as the car doesn't get used too much and when it does it's only short journeys.
All good until tonight when the wife went to pick up our 17 yr old daughter from work which is 600 metres away. Don't get me started on why she won't walk or cycle.. Anyway, she came in and said the red battery light has come on.
See what I mean about short journeys? Why would the light suddenly come on?
Any ideas before I take a look at it tomorrow.

Mine comes on every time I stop the car,I think it’s something to do with the dash cam as it’s ever since I fitted it & it did the same in my other L494.Even if I leave on charge all day the day after the light appears again also if I give it a 3-4 hour run as soon as I stop the car the light appears,I think it’s only the small battery for the stop start in the rear that’s causing the problem as I’ve never had a problem starting the car.

Most likely a failed alternator. 07MY RRS TDV6

The battery had 12.1 volts before starting this morning. It was 13.48 for the first two minutes all ok and then there was a whining noise from alternator I assume and voltage was 13.05 and dropping..
Odd timing as I charged the battery the other day. Could that have damaged something?

Strange that the alternator would fail as soon as I charged the battery. Its goin in on Thurs anyway. I have a funny feeling its the battery. I don't know why tho.

Well I have just had it running for 20min on the drive. The voltage across the battery showed 12.1 V. After a while there were all sorts of bongs from the dash and all the warnings came on - I assume these were because the battery was only at 11.8v by then. I stopped it but it restarted no probs. I've got the battery on charge again as I need to drive it to the garage on Thurs.

I would expect to see 14.4V or thereabouts if the alternator was performing correctly,, even if the battery was duff. The car won't run for very long if the battery is not getting any charge 2010 RRS, TDV8

12.1 volts indicates around 45% charge. 2023 P440e SE Dynamic on order -cancelled

That is symptomatic of a failed alternator - I had this earlier this year - will generate power sometimes but not all the time - dash lights and gongs. Car would still start and move but all sorts of failures. 07MY RRS TDV6

If it only had 12.1V across it with the engine running then the alternator is Censored . The loss of charge whilst running is also indicative of that. The battery could be damaged too by now, sadly. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Twas a failure of the alternator. Purely coincidental. Cost £500.. Im not putting a battery charger on it ever again..
The door locks are automatically locking when driving off now and they weren't before. I'm not sure if i like it that way so how do I change the function?

Was nothing to do with a battery charger - there are no issues with putting on a charger with the battery in the car if it is done correctly. +ive on the +ive side of the battery and -ive on the earthing post near the battery, not on the -ive post of the battery.
