3.0tdv6 Timing Locking pin diameter Help Please

Evening all,

I have booked a slot in a local garage tomorrow to replace my timing belt. unfortunately as i have only just got back from working away this week (unplanned) i can not locate my timing locking pins (The wife swears she didn't touch them.... Censored even though they were on the side last week...!!!)

So i am stuck with either not bothering and loosing my money or using drill bits or similar as no local supplier holds the pins in stock.

Does anyone have any that they can accurately measure and let me know the diameter and length.

2.7 ones are

Shade under 6mm dia

At least 60mm long. Normal ones are 120mm long

Thx guys. Got that sorted..

How tight is the fan held on.. struggling to get it off at the moment..
Has any got any tips?

the fan is the most difficult part of the job.

With the AUX belt left on:

you need a tool to hold the "hub" pointing towards the air box.
Then a fan spanner pointing upwards.
Hit the spanner with a mallet to shock it.

Hi Andy, thx for replying.

Managed to get the fan off by using a jack handle to extend the viscous fan spanner.. was very easy then so must have weekend it a little before hand 🤪

I have the 3.0 engine and there is more vacuumed pipes and coolant hose/s than in DM guide so feeling a little weary proceeding..

Wish I had someone with me who has done this before 😬

I am in the same boat...just about to change, with some trepidation, both belts on a 3.0 SDV6.The pins I have are both 6mm,so looks like I will have to get the neighbour to trim them down,using his lathe, to 5.8mm.My flywheel locking tool has a pin size of 9.8mm stepping up to 34.98mm where it fits into the engine back plate.....will this also require some trimming down?Hopefully the Toledo fuel pump tool[304784]is up to the job without modification.
How are you going view the rear belt...mirror.....phone....dashcam?
Eagerly awaiting your progress report,if possible with photos.

Hi, i canned it at the weekend as i didnt want to take any risks with limited time.

I have since managed to get hold of the workshop manual which details the procedure so will post up the pics when i do it this weekend on my drive.

Im not doing the rear at the moment will look at that separately another time.

Hi Eddy,

I completed the front belts yesterday with the workshop manual as my guide. Quite a simple job really. PM me and I will send you the sections.

Make sure you have plenty of time and all of the tools to complete, some notable tools needed are

1). E14 (star type socket) don't quote me on the size
2). Either extra deep sockets or vortex socket set (6, 8 & 10mm needed)
3). Long Breaker bar
4). Viscous spanner (Think its 36mm and flat)
5). Viscous fan holding tool
6). locking pins (6mm will fit)

Tips to make it easier...

a). Lower the car to its lowest setting. I used the GAP IID tool to deflate the corners so it went to the bump stops (I'm 5'10)
b). You need to extend the length of the Viscous spanner to help loosen the fan. I found it impossible with it at the standard length so used the handle of a small jack to push over one of the fingers of the spanner end and it came loose very easily
c). Use the breaker bar with an adaptor to pull the aux belt tensioner (second pair of hands is good at this point)

4 and 5 are vital. You will waste hours otherwise
