5.0 V8 Engine

Hi Guys,

Is the normal 5.0 V8 car similar to a diesel engine RRS in so much as does it have the same low effort throttle response?

The 3.0 Petrol engine didn't personally work for me in the RRS I tested as it was a very revvy engine - lot of fun in an F-Type though!

Also not sure about the P400e yet.

Thoughts?

5.0 V8 SC or the older L320 normally aspirated? In a high gear at say 40mph, the SC needs a kick to come alive.

Would be a newer one from a 2018/2019 car . . .

If I understand, you are asking about the actual accelerator effort rather than engine response? Having driven a TDV6 loaner, an SDV6 loaner, and of course my SC, the diesels seem to require slightly less foot pressure.

While the SC has awesome grunt, for my normal daily use I would actually be happy with a TDV6 S or SE. I hardly use all the toys and actually enjoy basic uncomplicated aesthetically pleasing functionality.

On the few occasions I have given the SC some stick, I wonder if the rest of the drivetrain doesn’t struggle a little under load?

Yeah like for more relaxed/restrained driving, the roll on power of the diesels in big 4x4s is very natural.

If my 4.4 SDV8 were to be replaced, there would be almost no point replacing it with another SDV8 in my eyes as they've crippled the gearbox in the 2019 model so its the same exact speed as the SDV6 now.

So it would be one of the following in Autobiography spec;

5.0L V8 SC (non SVR)
P400e
SDV6

I'm leaning towards the big petrol car as the P400e doesn't make sense to me beyond the environmental benefits - I'd spend most of my time on petrol power only as I have no charging stations anywhere and I'm not sure I'd want the SDV6 as I'd want a bit more oomph than that engine provides.

Just wondering on the power delivery and the noise (not a big fan of the SVR noise at all) from the 5.0L V8 SC engine.

Thanks

For me, the single biggest difference between diesel and petrol power was/is engine accelerator response.

In Jags and RRs, With the petrol it is instant, the diesels still exhibit lag, and usually under the worst circumstances (e.g. when you decide to "go" at a roundabout after slowing down considerably, and you need instant response to use a gap in the traffic).

For me it is a night and day thing. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

Need to drive one of the big petrols really and see what they're like!

Driven an F-Type with that engine but I'm guessing its completely different!

Agree with Wilf, once you push the accelerator, the petrol response is instant compared to the 1 second lag of the diesel, even more in dynamic mode. But my perception is the actual pressure required on the accelerator seems to be slightly less on the diesel loaners I have driven. My neighbour has a 4.4, I will see if I can take it round the block Smile

What's changed with the 18/19 SDV8 gearbox? SDV8 arrived and fantastic even the infotainment!
1983 2 door Range Rover ARB Bar X9000 winch ARB Rear Bar now semi retired.
Many big trips done in this one.
1982 Rangerover nearly restored.
22 Defender D250 with lots of stuff for outback touring
Nice 2013 Freelander TD4 manual (for daughter to learn on) with much better stereo compared with previous SD4 SE with Meridian which sounded bad!
2013 Land Rover Defender ute.

I can't speak for the Aussie market but for WLTP emissions testing across Europe they've changed the gearbox calibration so now the SDV8 here is the same speed as the SDV6 as you can see from this page;

https://rules.config.landrover.com/jdxl/en...1533769587

3.0 Litre SDV6 Diesel (306HP)

Power: 306hp
Torque: 700Nm
Maximum Speed mph: 130/140*
Acceleration 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds
Combined mpg: up to 37.7
CO₂ emissions g/km: from 199

4.4 Litre SDV8 Diesel (339HP)

Power: 339hp
Torque: 740Nm
Maximum Speed mph: 130/140*
Acceleration 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds
Combined mpg: up to 30.4
CO₂ emissions g/km: from 245

and I'm not sure I'd personally pay £7000 more for just the V8 rumble however nice it does feel in a Range.

BKHK - you have the normal SC V8 as opposed to the SVR ? Have you driven or heard an SVR ?

Is the non-SVR V8 a much quieter car ?

Non SVR 5.0 SC is quieter than SVR but it still barks and spits when you put your foot down, but it doesn’t give the crackle and pop on the overrun like the SVR.

The accelerator pedals are not connected to anything other than a potentiometer, I guess the internal spring rate could be different. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

And I think it probably varies car to car. I used to find the same when I had my M3, mine felt slightly different to BMW’s cars in the same mode.

So noise wise its a lot quieter/more relaxed than the SVR ?

I had a go in a RRS SVR and it wasn't personally for me with all the noise Smile
