How much tread ?

Okay admit my ignorance here - but how much tread is there on a new tyre ?

Just had the free winter check and the tyres are down to 5.8mm to 6.2mm. Cars 3 months old and 6400 miles. Mostly motorway miles and not driven hard. Doesnt seem alot left considering mileage. MY10 TDV6 HSE, Alaska White, Ebony with Contrast, Park Heat, Paddle Shift, Privacy, Heated Steering Wheel, Extended & Premium Leather,

Hmm, that doesn't seem too bad really? 2mm in 6.5k.., that means you're going to get around 20,000m from a set of rubber on a big helfty 4x4. Could be a whole lot worse? Neutral

Measure your spare, could be as low as 6.5mm to 8mm depending on tyre make. Highest I've ever seen is 9.5mm on Michelin 235/70 16" rim size disco tyres - they were good for 50,000miles! Softer compounds and lower tread blocks when new for stability at high loads/speeds means much lower life on the RRS though Crying or Very sad Cheers

So therefore not too bad so far ?

Not sure how you worked out 20,000 miles, presume the legal limit is still 4mm ? MY10 TDV6 HSE, Alaska White, Ebony with Contrast, Park Heat, Paddle Shift, Privacy, Heated Steering Wheel, Extended & Premium Leather,

Well, if a tyre starts with 7.5-8.0mm tread, then you've used an average of either 1.5mm or 2mm. So, the remaining 4mm+ of tread represents slightly more than 2/3 of your tyre life. With just less than a third gone after 6400m, 20,000m looks a likely distance they'll go before you hit the 1.6mm replacement limit that Cliff correctly stated.

Having said that, I think you'll find most experts would recommend replacing tyres well before 1.6mm as the road-holding quality and wet characteristices will have significantly diminished.

Phew, that's enough maths for one day thanks! Yawn
