2012 Headlight dip/high beam mismatch.

Hello all.
Just got a 2012.
As usual with used cars the headlights need adjusted properly.
The H7s seem to be seated firmly, and so do the dip xenons.
I have lowered the main beams from halfway up the trees Rolling Eyes to nearly on the road, but now the dips are ridiculously low.
I believe the headlights are "adaptive". Don't know what that means.
Anyone know if the xenon dips can be altered separately.

No you can not adjust Main Beam and Dip Beam separately. Adaptive just means the beam moves to suit driving conditions i.e if turn a corner the beam moves to illuminate more of the road based on the direction you turn the steering wheel as it is in part controlled by the steering wheel movement, however I'm sure someone will be along to give you chapter and verse on the subject shortly. Laughing It is not the same as cornering lamps though they just illuminate the kerb when cornering.

Cheers
Col

Sounds like the headlight module has possibly died if they were aimed into the trees initially. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

Well.....
The beams do a little wiggle when starting, so it looks "alive".
The slightly high dip was what prompted me to fiddle. I actually thought the strange lights up the trees were reflections off the shiny chrome tubes that the main reflectors are at the back of.
On bringing the dips down to sensible angle, the main beams then became more obvious and I realised they were still above the horizontal.
There is far too much angular difference between the dip and main for this to be the intended arrangement, so one or other must be wrong.

Land Rover always seem to have high beam pointing to the stars…

your not the first to complain.

The main beams are quite good once set properly. Good range and spread.
It's the dips that are now a problem, stretching no more than two car lengths.
Poor for rural driving, and a bit dodgy on the motorway where that's all you've got.
I'm going to take the headlights out again and really check the the bulbs carefully.
Pretty sure the dips would fail an MOT for being too low.

Sounds normal

Got to remember as a high car you are already blinding on commers with xenon’s without them being higher!

Poked about a bit further.
Main beams are simple and straightforward, and I would conclude they can't be wrong.
I cannot see any motorised adjustment up/down/sideways for the reflector chassis in my headlamps.
Looks like I don't have adaptive headlights. I certainly don't notice any sideways movement when I'm cornering. Was it an option?

That leaves me with the more complicated dips to figure out.

I am aware there is a built in adjustment for driving on the right. Supposed to be a lever beside the bulbholder.
Not on mine. I can see the mechanism which moves the "shield" and a cog attached to it, so I'm guessing it's electric?

When I start the engine, the dips come on and go slightly down. I have noticed modern zenon/led/whatever headlights in various cars coming on low and moving up?
Maybe this is the cause of the problem.
Any advice on whether these need "set-up", and how?

Just had a look at a MY11 & MY13 sales brochure and adaptive lighting was a option on all variant except the 5.0L A/B which it was standard on, so you may not have it, the cornering lamps were standard on all variants, but obviously that is a different thing to the adaptive lighting.

Cheers

Thanks for that Col.
Might have to go and park facing a wall, and see what exactly the dips do.
Maybe they have some leveling function as well as the left hand/right hand drive changeover.
Can't see why they would need to if the vehicle is self leveling.

Anyone know how to change the dip for driving on the right?
The mechanism might be stopped in the wrong position, and switching back and forth might free or reset it.

You don't, the design of the lens/beam pattern makes it adjustment free.

I believe it’s called a flat beam. (No kick up on one side )
You could also call it compromised or poor
