Unusual split tailgate fault (Plus hello, I’m new).

Firstly, an introduction. I’ve been reading the forum a while to gain plenty of advice on the L320 prior to buying one and joined last month after I eventually took the plunge. I ended up with a late 07 Overfinch RRS TDV8 in Java black Very Happy

I’m well aware of the usual split tailgate issues and this was one of the usual niggles I looked for when buying it.

So, this is the issue:

The usual not opening on top half and this is the route I’ve gone down so far and it still isn’t working:

- New switch (checked for correct operation/continuity as a precaution).
- Checked wiring loom for continuity between switch and car interior roof lining and all is correct.
- Latch sensor for main tailgate lock works correctly.
- Latch sensor on upper tailgate is working correctly and powerclose operates correctly on the lower part if the latch is locked and sensor activated.
- Upper tailgate release motor works correctly when power applied via a test lead and all nylon gears are in as-new condition and free to move. .

Weird part of the fault:

With the upper glass open (after manually releasing it after removing the trim), the main boot will still open on the button or with the remote I seem to remember reading that it shouldn’t as they are electrically interlocked against each other.

No short circuits, all earths are correct with zero resistance.

What’s the next step please for anyone who’s delved in to this sort of thing before more than just changing the switch.

Foot note, it was quicker to change both front air springs and drop links than try fault find this 🙈🤭

Cheers gents. Below is my RRS Very Happy

Nice garage

you have power close on a 2007 ? Probably aftermarket and could be the cause of the problem? as you don't normally have power close and glass opening together?

yes you are correct, they should be interlocked, so neither can open together.

So the CJB isn't seeing the glass open. That is worth a fault find.

So I reckon

1) Different software programmed into CJB as it has power close enabled?

2) Check wires nearer the front by passenger door sill. Do they still detect button pressed ? and glass open state?
Could be faulty CJB but not worth the trouble replacing for that fault.

3) you could fit a remote open button inside

Cheers for the time to reply Andy.

My apologies for confusion, it is soft close for the main tailgate and not power close that is fitted. I’ll have a look at where the wires go back up front, but I’d be surprised if there’s a fault on the wiring away from any rubbing or movement points. If it is a faulty CJB then I’ll just leave it or come up with a hard wired workaround instead.

The garage is a great place to be. I built it 2 years ago to house my M5 after a tile slipped off the house roof and landed 2 foot in front on it 😮😐. It’s more of a workshop where I do DIY video guides for the M5 owners too. Work had/play hard and all that 😅

Cheers steve. Had it 4 years now. It’s one of those cars that you fall in love with over and over again 😍

Many trips to the Nurburgring in her too. I’d say I’ve done more miles abroad in it than in the UK 🤭🤣
